I decided to rebuild my drift car from last year, Gem-s13 told me Ffrench had Johnny P's 180 shell there with a savage cage so i went for a look and ended up bringing it away.

The shell is fabricated now, i just finished the gearbox tunnel, im running RB box so i went a small bit bigger than standard without going mad because im want to run the original heater.

I still have the boot to do when i get my alloy tank but im in no hurry with that at the moment.

First time EVER uploading pics so i dont know if this will work or not

Frankae86
19-11-09, 22:51
Most of them are blurry actually, must do a bit of practice with the camera!
The tub is fully welded on the underside and seam welded on top.
The gearbox tunnel is welded fully on both sides.

Frankae86

wat happened your own shell!
Im selling it to a buddy that wrote his own off. I wanted to buy another shell and have it further along than i am at the moment but thats always the case.
I mainly bought this shell because the cage is ridiculously cool!

Its manky dirty inside because it was upside-down while i can cleaning off the shutz and it ran inside the car,
Dont worry it wont be that way long :)

Frankae86
19-11-09, 23:24
The shell was half seam welded when i got it but it was high and lumpy enough,
I seam welded what wasnt done but ive yet to grind the old welds.

Frankae86
27-11-09, 23:26
For under the bonnet and the both arches and front panel i used 2ltrs of primer, spent almost a day rubbing it down by hand
3/4 of a ltr of white to counteract the poor opacity of the yellow
And finally 1 and a half ltrs of 2k yellow!

And the insides of my Tubs, I cut out the square section thats normally there and Johnny P was rubbing it on both sides!
If i can find the piece i cut out il put up a pic of the difference

Frankae86
28-11-09, 16:05
It was a much easier job than i thought, as i said i marked out what i wanted to cut away (the square bit up the front) and shaped a piece of bonnet material 1.5mm i think it was.

Frankae86
28-11-09, 23:00
Not sure yet lad, depends on what money i have really,
Lad i know has a Brian Crower stroker kit i had a few wet dreams about that
E85 is also buzzing around my head 450+ would be nice but to be honest i wasnt caught for power as it was :D

Im gonna have the shell and the chassis 100% (i hope) and i can always drop in more power after.

Frankae86
28-11-09, 23:04
So far ive bought for this car
RB25 box,
DW lower arms,
Winged/baffled sump,
and a cool Bride rev clock.
Will get pics up next time, the camera ran out of battery on me yesterday.

Unfortunatley those few items are nothing compared to the list of stuff i do want for the car :(

Have the red car up at the garage this week, have it ready to take out the engine tomorrow evening. Even got a chance to start bolting a few bits under the bonnet of the new car, sick of just taking stuff off ;)

The wiring is going to wreck my head! and take me forever to do.

05-12-09, 19:52
After hearing all this needing lights working i might run wires for them.
Stripped my engine this evening, ive pics loading as we speak.

Also got my alloy tank and dry cell battery is on the way so ill have the inside and underneath of the car painted by next weekend i hope!

I must do a bit of thinking before i even post about wiring paul
I want it very simple and tidy but you are right its mostly the same wires and plugs.

Frankae86
05-12-09, 19:57
Well took the engine out thurs night and started ripping it today.

http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/xx58/frankae86/DSCF0049.jpg

I always thought it was a red top engine but Gem suggested it was only a painted blacktop, i have numbers off the pistons coming up so people might be able to tell me....

jamie180sx
05-12-09, 20:03
it has the cooling fins on the head so I'd say it's a redtop

Frankae86
05-12-09, 20:07
Cool, Expand on the cooling fins for those peole who dont know what your talking about lad...... would'nt be me of course ;)

Frankae86
05-12-09, 20:13
When i bought the car the clutch was gone and bobs were scarce so i just put in an exedy paddle and also got a lightweight F/W.
Ive heard loads of people saying they are a crap clutch and so on....

I was out 10 times with the car last year and the clutch is like new!
Maybe i wasnt using it enough

To bring the car to the garage i put the TRIAL wheels i got under it,
Dont know what to make of them to be honest, i might use them.
Paint the center's and the car will be lower.

What do ye think?
http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/xx58/frankae86/DSCF0053.jpg

Editing just to say Gem i dont want your opinion, i already know it :D
Anyone else ill welcome them ha ha

Aidan Hogan
05-12-09, 20:38
personally ive never liked the 3 spoke wheels but thats just my opinion.

Frankae86
05-12-09, 20:41
During a drift day at mondello i noticed the car was building up pressure in the water system and throwing it out the overflow so headgasket sprung to mind.

The car was supposed to have metal H/G and cams etc but when i ripped it i found everything to be totally standard in the engine. I think the engine was changed since andy gray had it as im sure he said it had a metal H/G.

http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/xx58/frankae86/DSCF0054.jpg

Here is the top of a piston to verify what model engine it is
http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/xx58/frankae86/DSCF0056.jpg

This is one for Colm, the pick up pipe! which one is this again :p S13 i suppose

The good news is the headgasket is gone but the block is damaged,

My boss wasnt around this evening to give his advice but i hope it can be skimmed or whatever

I took the block into the booth to get a bit of light on the subject, we will see now how they turned out, my pics still come out crap :(

Frankae86
05-12-09, 21:03
The first pic is without the gasket, you can see a groove pitted into the block
The second is with the gasket down where its gone
The last pic is how the gasket should be, nice and even all the way round.

Im actually thinking of painting them the colour or a similar colour to the red car, Ah we'll see they are not a pressing thing yet.

Frankae86
05-12-09, 21:24

Frankae86

The new car is being painted a different colour.
Im 99% sure which colour but i wont say anything until its painted in case i change my mind or whatever.

Frankae86

05-12-09, 23:30
Stoopid question here but what is are the differences between Redtop and Black?? Is there alot?

Frankae86
05-12-09, 23:34
Thats a question i cant answer, Alan Sinnott says the redtop cams are rite good other than that im not sure. Gem mentioned bigger valves or something.

Dunnedriftin
05-12-09, 23:43
Red top dosnt have VVT iirc..

colm
06-12-09, 00:30
Not bad for a days work :D

its kinda hard to tell from the pics but id say a skim on your block will clean up any damage on it lad, your better off getting the head and deck skimmed if your going to use a mhg anyways.

As far as i know theres sweet feck all differeneces between the redtop and blacktop sr's that came in 180s, neither had vvt. The black top in s14s has vvt, a different rocker cover, differnt cams, extra oil holes in the head etc.

The shells look pretty decent in that pic, is there any wear on the crank?

Oh and that looks like the s14 oil pick up too ;)

Frankae86
06-12-09, 17:51
The bearings were in good order ya, one of the shell bearings had fair wear on it but nothing major.
One of the main bearings had a line through it i can feel with my fingernail like it picked up a bit of grit one time i checked the crank and cant see any mark at all on it.
Ill decide what to do and give the block to the engine engineer lad.

Frankae86
12-12-09, 22:26
Last week was one of those times your doing work but you dont see much progress, balls!
Primed it inside,
Painted the cage,
Got my alloy tank and got it modified to fit where i wanted it
Made brackets to hold the tank

Not sure did i do much else :(

Pics tomorrow, might paint it inside tomorrow but i cant finish the boot till i get the swirl pot and pump n stuff.

On a good note ive decided what to do with my engine and lets just say where the block is pitted it wont matter anymore :)

The downside is having no money because nobody will buy my cars and wondering who ill get to do the engine work for me

Frankae86
13-12-09, 18:08
Few of the cage painted

Frame i made for holding the tank
http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/xx58/frankae86/DSCF0037.jpg

The back corners modified to have the tank closer to the centre
http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/xx58/frankae86/DSCF0039-1.jpg

The tank sitting in place, the straps must still be made and the cardboard is for a template for aluminium thats what the boot floor is gonna be :p
http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/xx58/frankae86/DSCF0036.jpg

The tank was supposed to have a built in swirl put but it doesnt so i cant finish the boot now coz im waiting for it, Colm (on here) told me the bosch 044 pumps are best fitted under the outlet of the tank so im gonna make a box to hold the pump and filter.

13-12-09, 18:26
savage job painting the cage id say it was fairly tedeous masking it all up:confused:
Would ya consider mike deane for building your engine?

Dunnedriftin
13-12-09, 18:27
Shes lookin fair sweet now lad!

puttin me to shame! :o

i need a job, this no income is poxy!

Frankae86
13-12-09, 18:49
Cheers boyo's

Dunnedriftin : Im building the car on a minimal income lad, i havent drank in ages and ive a wedding coming up so cant imagine what kind of a state im gonna be in

Micko : Ya was a bit of a wanker to mask off alrite, i said id paint the cage first it would be easier pain the rest after. I didnt go mad masking off a bit or overspray on the primer makes no odds because ill be rubbing it down.

Way2fast... : Ya i bought it off a rally lad i deal with, they do some good work up in group4 alrite. Shame i didnt get the feckin tank i wanted!

Micko: Im gonna put it together myself, if ive any bother i can just ring Alan :D
Its getting bored and liners put and id go proper nuts if there was a problem so im not sure who to take it to......

A local fellow McCarthy engine's is the obvious choice, He does all Mick deans work i think and John Moynihan rallying sends all his work and customers work there. Its like the mapping story though ive heard a few bad stories..
Ah we'll see

way2fastforu
13-12-09, 19:26
ya they do some savage work alrite thats who i got my hydro wand off

colm
13-12-09, 21:03
that tank is savage. how many litres does it hold?

Your definatly making the right choice with the engine ;)

Frankae86
13-12-09, 21:12
It is a 12 gallon tank which is loads so i could easily afford the back corners taken off.
I should be ordering all the engine bits next week!

is being able to flip the car around on the stand a big help? im debating weither to make up something to do the job or not.

Frankae86
29-12-09, 10:57
Depends what plans ya have for under the car, like i had it that way 30% of the time say. I could rotate the car and stop it wherever i want, i think its dead handy.

My buddy that made the spit now has the rack and subframe that came on this car so he's modifying the subframe to bring the rack forward. Same as done by superclarkey on Driftworks
. It allows for more travel and with it this car should have the best lock possible in an Sbody or next to it anyway.

He's a welder by trade and if people are interested he might start making them on an exchange basis. I wont know till he makes this one if he's interested or not.

colm
29-12-09, 15:35
im planning on doing some seam welding and undersealing, i think the spit will have to be made.

it'll be good to see what sort of lock you can get now with the knuckles and steerings rack pulled forward

Its a 20G turbo, was already on the car. Great turbo on boost but ya i found it laggy, with the right clutch control its grand though :p

Was going to buy a BC stroker kit off a buddy of mine (he still has it) but was a small bit out of budget so im just boring it and using standard crank.

In bed here dying after a wedding so not much progress is gonna be made today :o

Yeah the cage is user friendly enough, in contact with TDP at the moment for "the works" head work, doing the block and then mapping it so im happy enough.

Sorry for not updating with ages, didnt get a wholle pile done since new year with the feckin flu!
Took the wiring loom out and took out most of the wires i dont want from it.

Put the wiring loom into the car this evening, roughly because ill more than likley have changes to make. Add back the wires i cut and needed

Because i made the gearbox tunnel bigger i had to modify the standard heater box and motor.

Going to make a center console then im sending the Dash off to be flocked....

Will update with pics the weekend if i get a chance.

Greg
24-01-10, 19:09
The dash is damn cool. Fair play.

Frankae86
24-01-10, 21:53
The dash is done by a local guy "shamrock rally spares" He does a lot of rally stuff. Cost 130euro for the dash and clocks surround.
I cut the dash and shaped a centre console in cardboard then gave it to my uncle who made it alumin and i wanted a centre that i could bolt off to get at wiring

Way2fast : The hydro that was in the car was bolted to the tunnel very weakly and way in the way of your knee and pointing at the wrong angle
So i sat in the car and marked exactly where i wanted itand made up a STRONG bracket.
The cylinder is back near the end of the tunnel and ill have a bar of some sort linking the lever to the cylinder. will take a bit of setting up but nothing major.

Im happy out with the job Dave did on the dash alright, id definatley reccomend him and he said people send him stuff by courier all the time.

Cooldrft on here made me a few fittings during the week that were missing out of the box when i bought s.hand DW lower arms
So cheers james..
He's also making up fuel filters for me.

Should be a good job lad, i hope to find out soon how it works :D
It was a cunt before mounted down low and the bracket moving before you even pull the handbrake!
And it was held with good old gutter bolts, ah you've gotta love the irish :p

way2fastforu
24-01-10, 22:07
haha cant beat the old gutter bolts:Das long as u use a good solid bar between the lever an the cylinder should work very good!!im gona weld 3mm plate onto the tunnel to support mine should be good an strong wit no flex then:D jus have to decide to stick wit my current set up or somethin similiar to yours

I wanted to build a stroked 2.2 but the BC crank and rods fell through.
I got talking to a lad that has a short stroke 2.2 and i decided to go that route.

Im using the standard crank with ACL's and i have a new oem oil pump, I dont know about the gti-r oil pump upgrade?

When i saw TDP's thread about their machine work i knew there was only one place to get the block built! I got talking to Robbie and he wants redtop cams and is going to do some custom headwork. So ill let him use his magic.

I am waiting for a few bits for the RB25 box conv and that was putting a dampner on my mood, but i was talking to Alan Sinnott there and i might just put up the SR box for mapping and round1.

Ill possibly be able to answer your question next weekend lad!

What way you gonna run it in................!

Frankae86
12-04-10, 22:50
On the road, monitoring the fueling and checking for leaks. etc
Im gonna drive it as normal really up and down the revs witout going mad.
Some say run it in easy others say hard straight on the dyno!

Cheers lads :)
So yesterday evening my buddy Wes thats wiring it for me came to finish it off and run the engine in, by the time we got going we only had half an hour before dark so we did as much driving as we could.

At around 12 the car starting running bad and we noticed it wasnt charging so off down to a crashed 180 to whip the alternator off it, by the time i had it fitted and the car on the trailer etc it was gone 1 o clock,
When i had my stuff together and in bed it was 2 and i had the alarm set for 5

So after in around 3 hours sleep i set off for wicklow, just after mallow i got a flat in the trailer and i was a c*nt to change because the lad before me had the threads damaged on 3 of the 4 studs :(

bart
14-04-10, 21:06
so did you make wicklow ted??????????

Frankae86
14-04-10, 21:15
Was a small bit late arriving at TDP but they didnt mind :)
The lads were in good form today and we got the 180 on the dynapack swiftly enough...

I told Robbie how much and what way i drove the car so i let him do his thing on the dyno. To say i was nervous when the car was being mapped is an understatment, ive the front of my trousers worn away from wiping my sweaty hands on them throughout :D
Robbie says whats wrong and i said " oh i just hope it doesnt blow up"
And he casually says "well if its built right it wont"......
I was like ahhhhhh

Halfway through he seemed happy and said things were going well, it was making going power and stuff.

He mapped in on 2 settings

At just under 1.2bar boost it made 403.7flyHP 396.4lbft
At just under 1.5bar boost it made 465.6flyHP 477.2lbft

WheelHP is 351 and 404.

We were both happy with the figures and Robbie said he could have possibly gone a bit further but didnt want to be brushing up bits of SR box for a week!

He said its a brilliant setup for drifting, very responsive.

Frankae86
14-04-10, 21:19
The bad news is im still waiting on modified steering arms i need to be able to set the car up and Robbie reckons the gearbox wont last 1 upshift to third gear :(
Im uploading pics at the min but i could fall asleep before the finish

14-04-10, 21:23
fair play to you nice figure and lovely matching torque throw up the dyno print outs don't forget to change your sig

it makes it all worth while now doesn't it

Frankae86
14-04-10, 21:29
Ya i took a few photo's of the dyno printouts but the are crap enough
I cant seem to take a good pic with the camera!
If people want to see the graphs i can try and take the better outside during the day or something but i only have the figures in case people think in adding to them.

It will be worth it when m out there breaking bits of the car etc :p
The only thing being minded will be the engine and maybe the box :)

I hardley get near it these days lad so its safe enough, well it should be

Yeah im happy with the figures alright but they are just figures after,
Ill notice the difference when i get in and actually drive it properly.

Id say its building boost earlier and much better than before, robbie reckons the headwork was a good job...
Like i said Robbie said i could make massive figures with more aggressive cams and few other small bits but the power will not be as "useable" as this setup
