View Full Version : Turbo Replacement Info
Hey Lads. After blowing my turbo Greddy t517z turbo at the last Tynagh Driftfest, Chucky and I need to get our asses in gear and replace it, now i have sorted another new turbo (same as above) to go in, but I need to know what caused mine to go the last time so it doesnt happen again.
The last turbo, didnt blow any smoke, it just stopped boosting (none at all)
There is massive shaft play. So I need the boffins to advise me on what to check that could have caused the issue in the first place.
Oil feed and return lines, Water lines etc. But how do I check them? Do I run the car, pull off an oil line on idle and watch oil come out????? (Could be the stupidist comment seen on here for a while!)
How would i check to see if its getting water, or if the return lines are clear?
Any info would be appreciated.
Cheers

Not sure why the old turbo went but make sure you check out the new turbo with the biggest vice grips you have.

Could be completely wrong here. From what I have heard they're very similar to a td06 turbo (I have), which are not water cooled meaning they do not have a water feed. They're oil cooled, so only have an oil feed and return.
If it wasn't smoking, maybe the oil seal within the turbo did not go, perhaps it was just general wear and abuse on the bearing over time causing the crazy play leading to its death?
How long did you get out of this turbo.. and when you put it in what condition was it in?
I'm no expert (or Boffin) BTW
Well I only got the car 2 weeks before tynagh, so it was its first outing, not sure how much use it had previous! So u think it's just oil lines?? Any clue how to check if it's getting an oil feed? Or return? I'm hoping it was general wear n tear. Anyone any more input?
If you have taken the turbo out were there any obvious signs of damage on it? cracks, etc.?
I assume that if if you remove the oil lines connected to it and there's oil in them then it was getting an oil feed.
I'm no expert either, that's just my suggestions on it.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing but wanna make sure it was getting oil before I pull it out and wanted to see if there is a specific way of checking??

you really need to get it looked at by a tech
internet probly wont help you on this one
Is it ball bearing does it have a oil restrictor? Also just stop boosting ? Is ur actuator bolloxed? Should be a noticable probem if its the turbo
It apparently has floating bearings, think I might just take it out n have a tech head look at it!

Was the exhaust housing leaking or any sign of oil at the air flow meter
I don't think so lad, but I'll check when I'm taking it out, why what would that mean ?
what engine is it mate?could have been oil starvation on the turbo, could have been too much oil, you'll have to get it checked out for a proper answer...

When did you check the shaft of the turbo for play , before or after failure
After, in the pits. So I have no comparison to before and after, the actuator seemed ok?
What ya thinkin?

Pulling on the shaft can cause oil seal failure on this type of turbo , oil coming from the air intake would have been an indication of this turbo on its way out , or just the case of it had done enough work an nothing lasts forever
take it out first , then do the talkin !
any mechanic will tell you if you have excessive shaft play if you show them the turbo
