why do people not use z3's

theyre on the e36 platform, coilovers from e36 fit, the rears deffo do, not sure on the fronts.

they can look pretty good lowered and on a nice set of rims. im guessin the weight balance would be fairly spot on.

the 1.9 and 2 litre 4 pot engines im guessing are decent enough? the m roadster too expensive

why are they not used? is it because theyre still fairly expensive compared to an e36 325 or 328 or something?

been lookin at prices on donedeal, and there as cheap as pistonheads anyway.

weld diff, lower, think the 2 litre could be a decent skidder.

done a bit of reading and supposedly the diff mounts on them are a hoor for cracking and seperating..

bmw v8 powers would be nice alright!

The rear end is the same as an E30 or E36 compact which is shite.

the floor tears away with the diff but thats easy to prevent or fix

the 1.9s are nice dailys, the 2.8s are brilliant though and are savage craic for abit of fun on the road. Drove both for a while and they were both better than.thw Z3m roadster.

The Z3m Coupe is way better though and would be a very cool driftcar.


Z4 is leagues ahead in terms of chassis design and would be what Id be going for and stick an E39 M5 or E92 M3 V8 into it.

The Z4 coupe in GTR kit looks pretty cool too.

Still, if you got a 1.9 or 2L Z3 very cheap and stuck an E36 M3 engine into it you could have a very cool car fairly cheap and fun to slide once you put a decent cage in it to stop the shell wobbling about.
I know you could just get a roadster and drift that but I reckon making one from a 2L and S50 engine would be cheaper a the market for selling bits off the Z3 isnt very big like it is with E36s.
once steering rack and engine is gone, thats about it.

Z3m models do have much bigger rear axles of course but diff size will only allow you use a choice of 3.23, 3.63 or 3.91 ratios which are hard to get in the higher ratios.

Had a shitty 1.9 about 10 yrs ago, thought it was the dogs danglies at the time, was actually gonna buy a z3m last yr for 5k but it had a red roof on it, drove class though lol
Much better thanna mx5 IMO and not much dearer

The power is the only decent thing about the Z3m roadsters though and that is half the down-fall of them.

If you think the roadster was good, you should try a Coupe ;)

extra chassis and rear subframe braces does the world of good in stiffing the Z3s up though.

The nice thing about a Z3 for drifting too is that all the panels are bolt on so be very easy to repair it if you get a few tips.

Here's one stripped back to the chassis... albeit with an M6 V10 up front :)
