this could prove to be very usefull if the right people in the know share this info with use.. for example :

S body Nissans
nutts corner.....S13 4.?:1 (where to get such a diff,ie automatic r32 rb20 skyline)

mondello....S13 4.?:1 (etc........etc........)

if this collects the right info it would make for a good sticky...

So many factors you have to take into account,Power,Wheel size,Tyres,weight...
So So much,I just dont believe you can list it off the top of your head.

very true but if the peeps in the know post up as much info as they can when posting we could start putting together what could be quite a good reference to go by.

@ Tekno Twinky
this doesn't have to be just for S bodies or Nissans.I just put that as an example cause i have a RPS13, this could apply to all makes and models.

i think this could be very usefull to many people including myself. Plus we dont really have that many tracks here in ireland so it shouldn't be that hard to find out the ideal diff for your car on each track.

i use 4.3 on 5 speed box in mondello do it all in 3rd
and 4.1 on a 6 speed box in mondello and do it all in 4th

but it and depends on power and set up etc

carpo

also a 4.6 is very good on most tracks if you dont have much power

Good thinking shane, this thread is a v good idea.. i'll try keep an eye on it and edit all the different ratio's and specs for each track and keep it in the first post you put up!

Number of ways you can do this, draw a line (tip-ex) across the prop where it enters the diff and similarily on the halfshafts coming out of the diff, spin the half shaft one rotation and you'll see it takes the prob a number of full rotations untill the halfshaft has done one.. try guage from that if ya can!

Or take the back plate off your diff and count the ratio printed into the crown wheel, divide the smaller number by the bigger and that'll give ya your ratio!

The pro's give nothing away ;)

As already mentioned it depends on power etc... once you try a different ratio it will put it into better perspective, ie you will be able to guage it from your other cwp and see which works better.

I was using 4.3 mostly and using 3rd most of the time, i had a 3:9 and found 3 too long.....
Maybe next year ill be using the 3:9 and 3rd :)

So a 4.3, 4.1 for instance, how exactly does the difference between the ratios affect the 1. GRIP
2. How to power up to 3rd or 4th gear.

I know hard to answer questions

The "Ratio" has nothing to do with grip.

The lower the ratio like 4:7 like carpo is selling on here will bring your gearing down, so when you leave the line in first you will be pulling second instantly and second will be very short aswell, your actual speed will be down compared to a higher ratio diffs like a 3:7 and 3:9 thats standard in 180's and stuff.

Ok,so your speed would be down, but alot more wheel spin?

Frankae86

Yeah your top end speed will be down, it will spin up quicker and easier through the gears.

If your drifting a track and you find that your on the limiter in say second or third if your going well :) but you find the next gear up very long like you wont be able to keep the wheels spinning with the cars power or whatever you should try a lower final drive it will possibly work better.
From there you will figure out which diff you need on what track.

The worst part is going to a new venue like fermoy this year and not knowing how fast the track is going to be and what CWP to have in the car.........

Pick the higher ratio is how i look at it and dance on the clutch pedal after that if your bogging down :D

Above is mostly correct albeit UK s13 CA18DET is around 1:3.7, JDM S13 CA18DET 1:4.3 IIRC (that's old JDM s13 cars, from the era when 180sx had a proper 1.8 engine in it)

The difference was mostly due to different markets (motorways vs mountain/country roads)

Every car and every driver is different... I know fast_cav used to drift with an os giken gear kit, and a 3:9 diff I think.. 2nd gear was nearly 100mph.. he never had to change gear.
