View Full Version : Nigel Colfer / Marangoni Tire / Alpinestars 2012 180JZ
So I thought with this pretty major build going on I'd drop it on here for you guys to take a look at!
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d10/vdub97/386923_231889813538350_104657302928269_653479_1191 942659_n.jpg
This is how the old car stood at the end of the 2011 season. Due to the car being away for most of the year it had started too look very sorry for itself.
The car hadn't been touch'd in pretty much 2 years and with the Dubai hold up during last years off season there was only enough time to give the engine a quick refresh before it was off on its travels again for the 2012 season.
For a full round up on where this car has been check this out,
http://nigelcolfer.com/2011/12/16/farewell-rps13-056644/
Mechanically the car has been uber reliable for the past 2 years running 445hp/440 ft/lbs and has got me some great results.
So now that we have some time in the off season I decided to start fresh with another 180sx and use my knowledge of this set up to build a better car!!
The European tracks we have been running in 2011 are a lot different to what we're used to here in Ireland! So with Europe once again being where i'm concentrating my efforts for 2012 it was time to build a car to suit!
European tracks are getting faster and more and more dangerous so after I witnessed this crash in Romania I realised you cant put money on your own safety!

So the plan is simple, more power, better chassis and better looks!!!
I'll update this as I go along when I get a chance but head over to my facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Nigel-Colfer/124845270936950 and like for constant updates and info as we lead into whats goin to be a truely awesome 2012 season!!!
We've sourced quiet a few parts already!!
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d10/vdub97/24964dd6.jpg
New Garret GT35.82 thanks to Owens Developments.
In the previous set up we ran a .63 rear housing for some serious response, the .82 rear housing will make the turbo more efficient higher up in the rev range and give a few more horse's!!!
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d10/vdub97/391c1ae2.jpg
New Shotgun exhaust and new 1jz manifold. Thanks to Japspeed for looking after these parts for me!!
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d10/vdub97/fd0ebf40.jpg
D-max 180sx bonnet. Paul Howard and JDM Garage, you rock for hooking me up with this!!
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d10/vdub97/62760145.jpg
These are amazing. Koguchi Arch's. 50mm front and 70mm rear!
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d10/vdub97/4e04cee3.jpg
Long time supporter OBP have supplied these cool aluminium products for the new car! Super lightweight stuff!!
Along with these bits the old car has been stripped and the shell is sold.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d10/vdub97/705ed418.jpg
The engine has been packed and has been sent to my engine builder.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d10/vdub97/6a97a4e6.jpg
Compression is a small bit low on number 2 cylinder so with the car going travelling for 2012 no chances will be taken!
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d10/vdub97/7b390465.jpg
And well, here is the new 2012 car. A very clean unabused 180sx. No rust anywhere which is always a good point on a 180sx.
We're just in the process of stripping the new car and getting it ready for chassis prep!
This is where we sit at the moment and everything shall come together quiet quick!
All comments welcome guys!!! ;)

best of luck with the new build, gona have to be some machine if its to beat last seasons car!!
any idea when ur expectin to unvail the new car??
Gonna be one a hell of a car, best of luck with the build.
looking forward to sitting on the start line beside it :p

The engine already has bolts and bearings in the bottom end, which is plenty in a jz, Compression is down so either rings or a head problem. Will just bring the engine back to a good standard condition. Some mild head work and cams are the only changes im making. Still not sure on the mapper, either East Coast Customs or Greg Gush in the uk!!

Hoping to have it finished mid to end of March!! :)
Both good mappers, limited options with an F-con
that was my 180, imported in 2007..my first rwd, great to see it again

F-con does limit mappers but there's enough good mappers in the uk and Ireland that makes it justifiable!!

Nice to see some history behind it!! Unusual colour!! Did you put the white drivers door on her then?? :)

That looks deadly!
Looks the dogs bollox, but are those full roo bars illegal in the uk, i thought you cant have the bottom bar!?
Its just BDC that have banned these for very silly reasons. The bar is completley removable and does not hold anything on the car so if I ever do run BDC it can be removed!
The chassis is being built to full FD spec as it has the most comprehensive rule structure and everyone follows there specs eventually!!

Comin on well now Nigel ....
Complete lack of updates here!! Been very busy getting everything together but were on target for the car bein finished in 2 weeks!!
So we got the car back about a month ago from John stone who done a killer job on the cage!! Full FD spec and I'll be feeling very safe this year!! Every bar does a job and it is one seriously stiff chassis!!

The rear end set up incorporates the rear spoiler direct to the chassis, jacking point and also a safety bar for the fuel tank!

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d10/vdub97/e0f319f5.jpg
Panels mocked up before paint!! Koguchi and BN!! ;)
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d10/vdub97/2f0942d6.jpg
Xxr sent me across 8 of their 18x9.75 527's!! Currently being powder coated!!
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d10/vdub97/2992f9a1.jpg
The car was then stripped completly for paint!!
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d10/vdub97/4507ef4f.jpg
All suspension parts have been refurbed and once the shell was painted the subframes and suspension are put in place!!
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d10/vdub97/8c5d686e.jpg
And engine and trans have been dropped in for the final time!!
The Engine has had a complete rebuild, with BC 264 cams, adjustable pulleys, polished and ported head and a new garret gt35 .82 turbo!!
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d10/vdub97/21a89911.jpg
You can see the car is currently sitting on Driftworks CS2 coilovers, these will be for sale soon as KW are currently building a set of their competition 2way coilovers!!
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d10/vdub97/1a0d3b75.jpg

John is very good alri! Not for the Prodrift event as i'm away but it will be for the Drift Allstars event in July!
Sorry for the lack of updates, bein working 12/14 hour days to get the sorted for its first outing this weekend!!
Mapping threw up some electrical gremlin that caused the car to be very inconsistent on the rollers!!? So after 3 trips to East Coast Customs in Belfast we finally got to the bottom of the problem and ended up with this.....
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d10/vdub97/4cfbcde9.jpg
588hp and 490lbs/ft of torque!! Nearly 150hp more than last year!! :)
KW also sent over some spacers for their coilovers so we could get the right ride height and still let the suspension work properly!!
The exterior is nearly complete and looking pretty badass in its new colour!!
