View Full Version : skim the head or not??
im taken delivery of a 325 tramp 2moro and the head gasket is going/gone
so shes heating up but drives perfect while cold, starts first turn of the key
and all that.
well anyways my question is should i skim the head before putting in a new
head gasket.. if it was my everyday car i would just to be on the safe side
but as this is a tramp and iv no money, do ye think id get away without it or
will it just go again and will i be wasting my time..
any info appreciated. cheers Tommy.
Yes skim the head....Its only cost about 60 quid....its not going to break the bank but may do in the long run if you dont!!!

Its alot of work taking it off & putting it all back together to save €50!!
the head gasket only goes for 1 reason, HEAT, aluminium WARPS with the heat so yes you will need to surface the head!

ye lad get it skimmed for the sake of 50 blip it will cost you more on big end bearing and a rebuildi dont see how it would have anything to do with big end bearings or a rebuild? He could just recure the same problem as he already has.....Just skim the head, save you haveing to do the same work again shortly down the line!
It will be warped. thats why its over heating..lol
taking off any head remember there is a sequence to taking a head off, the same way it should be put on other wise you can warp it that way too .any scratches nicks on the mating surfaces could cause a gasket to leak too.
but since its a bmw its defo the head has warped...you checked the oil to see if there is water mixing with it or a leak? they are also known for a sticking thermostat...my advice if its a drift tramp ...see if thermo is working [put it into a cup of hot water] if it is drill extra holes in it for extra flow or take it out.
