*We're delighted to announce that TrackDay Performance (TDP.ie (www.tdp.ie)) have teamed up with driftireland.com to build this, the 2011 driftireland S14*

Following my first year in competition last year in the driftireland 180SX (http://driftireland.com/forum/showthread.php?t=94&highlight=driftireland), I managed to win the Prodrift Amateur Championship, and hope to again achieve some more great results in the Non-Seeded Pro Class in this S14 in 2011. With TrackDay Performances' knowledge and expertise in building top-end race, rally and drift cars behind us, its going to be all down to me now to try drive the car to its full potential!

So without further ado, I give you an outline of some of the plans TDP and I have in mind for the car;

CHASSIS:

A huge amount of chassis work is going to be carried out with this car, as its really important when building a competitive car that you start from the base - building the rest of the car around a fully rigid chassis incorporating a WRC spec cage which TDP will build for the S14. This rigid chassis and cage setup will allow us to run much softer suspension settings for maximum grip all round. This combined with a huge weight-loss program for the car should make it a very competitive setup!

SUSPENSION:

After the chassis work, we will focus on the suspension. All suspension arms are going to be designed and manufactured in-house at TDP, using CNC machined aero-spec billet alluminium and high quality German(SKF) rose-joints.. Steering modifications will tie-in with a custom front and rear suspension setup that will allow for lots of steering lock in the correct way, reducing the ackerman angle as much as possible for high speed drifting!

ENGINE & ELECTRONICS:

As TDP are a one-stop race car preparation shop, they will be taking care of all engine, drive-train and electronic issues. Using my healthy SR20DET engine from last year, it will be stripped down, machined, cleaned and rebuilt using Wossner forged pistons and the usual uprated componants. We will be running a Nistune ECU and a custom wiring loom to simplify the cars electronics and will further save weight.

No sooner had the car arrived at TDP, out came the marker and plasma cutter
as Robbie started cutting out some of the unnecessary weight from the rear of the car.

Part two of the strip-down in the TDP HQ- the lightweight plan with the plasma cutter!!

WEEK - 1

John continued cutting and removing as much weight as possible, but without sacrificing any strength in the shell.. Then he began reinforcing the rear with an X-bar from the rear chassis legs up through the floor to the rear top strut towers..

Yeah its unreal, credit to the lads - they really know what they're doing and even have the time to explain what every single bar in the cage is for and why exactly they're putting it there! Especially with the additional bracing and support to stiffen the chassis, and the tubing used there is a thinner wall and much lighter than that of the main safety points so its benifits are huge in comparison to the slight additional weight they add!

Peter I accept that you may not like the cage on aesthetic grounds.

On a technical grounds I challenge you wont find a better designed and built cage in any drift car or s body in Ireland. We dont just put bars in the cage to look good. Every bar has a purpose and the reinforcements through the firewall are very necessary to stiffen the front of the shell.

We dont think its overkill as it will allow to Jay to progress as a driver to the highest level in Ireland and beyond.

I know that it was a typo.

Every bar has a reason for being there it just looks a little complex compared to the usual drift spec cages!

A proper shell is the most important part of any car be it for drifting or racing as it's the one part that can't be changed ;)

I'm not having a go at you I'm just trying to explain why it's like that!

ive seen serious cages in mk2 escorts going through the firewall and into the front struts towers... thats a beast. this strong will be really strong incase of big impact

peterhouze
26-02-11, 20:51
it needs a strong cage but i think if your goin to spend so much on it make it fit the regs for all competitions so he doesnt have to build another car
as you said its the safest cage in ireland in a s-body and prob europe but he cant drive usa with it and thats where most drivers will end up
im just goin on what was said by a cage builder in the usa and he said forumlad would say no to it

robbie@tdp.ie
26-02-11, 20:52
how much are they robbie for a serious mad cage like that??

Every car and every cage is different. Base cages for S body's start at €850 and the amount of extra bracing is agreed between the customer and us based on a proper assessment of the shell and the rest of the parts being used.

Originally when i started this build with TDP we never set a deadline, and i'v wanted to build a really competitive car for a long time, and in order to do it right, it takes a long time! So with that in mind i'm not competing in Prodrift for the rest of the season in order to focus all my attention (and money!!) on this car.

The cage has been primed and i'm going to start making up seat mounts, handbrake mounts, and the rest of the necessary interior aswell as engine bay mountings and brackets.. The same again for subframes and suspension components and once the whole car has been assembled, i'll strip it back and then paint it to insure the paint doesnt get ruined from cutting and welding.

All the engine machining work has been done in TDP, and as soon as i get the pistons, headgasket, bearings and the rest of the engine components its ready to be built! I'll have a few pics of the engine machining very shortly, and keep this updated as the car progresses!

I was hoping to keep the colour scheme and choice of wheels quiet untill the car
was finished but then thought what if someone else thinks of the same idea?!!

So the plan is to paint the car a certain type of Grey colour, not 100% what shade yet!

Then the wheels will look something like theeeeeeeeeese:

17x9 (+6) Work Equip's for the front.

And a few 18 inch SSR Koenig's (Width and Offset to be decided!) for the rear.

YES! Exactly my mindset too. People get so caught up these days imo, in whats the perfect setup for drifting, with wisefab lock kits with 7j wheels, and ground clearance for bumpy tracks etc......screw all that in a sense as its not why I or most of us first thought drifting was awesome. Maybe running massive dished wheels that destroy your arches isnt the best idea, but I know you, like myself will enjoy it alot more when you pull it off, and when you see the car in pics and vids etc. Still cant understand why people might spend 20k+ on a build, have an amazing car, yet just throw a set of rotas and a Uras kit on. Why skimp on that little bit at the end? I know for alot of people winning is all thats important, but for me winning while being awesome is the ultimate.......and as said you atleast always have the backup of losing, but losing while being awesome haha!!:D

Yeah i'v driving a Racecar with a pedal box and got used to it straight away, and after driving various types of vehicles over the years i find ya get used to pretty much anything as long as the principle remains the same! Clutch, brake, accelerator etc!

I know for alot of people winning is all thats important, but for me winning while being awesome is the ultimate.......

Thats it in a nutshell! I appreciate the ultimate competition machine and i'm glad drivers build them for drifting to keep pushing the sport, but i'm hoping to keep the driftcar look too! Otherwise i would have picked circuit racing!:p

Here's some more detailed pics and descriptions of the work we've done over the last while!

First off I wanted to have the front panel removable to make working on the engine easier if needed,
and also somewhere safer to house the Intercooler!

So we marked and cut the front panel like so..

http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m495/JayRockett/The%202012%20DriftIreland%20-%20DI%20Motorsport%20S14/IMG_0312.jpg

The Intercooler is now up and out of harms way, with the Intercooler Piping
running through the headlamp holes which we made a bit bigger!

http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m495/JayRockett/The%202012%20DriftIreland%20-%20DI%20Motorsport%20S14/DSCF2572.jpg

Bob then cut and bent 2 piece's of sheet steel which would support the removable panel

Welding the supports in place

We then made spacers to space the Front Panel supporting legs out enough
to clear the Intercooler

Moving to the rear we made a Quick-Lift Jacking Point to make tyre
changes easier and quicker!

Its removable in case of a collision and its design is to collapsed on impact but
still remains strong enough to lift the car! Its also alot lighter than it may appear!

After that we made rails for the driver and passenger seats..

Cutting some lightweight 1" X 2" box in the Bandsaw

Bob welding the Driverside in place

http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m495/JayRockett/The%202012%20DriftIreland%20-%20DI%20Motorsport%20S14/DSCF2703.jpg

And idea cropped up at the start of this build in TDP to mount the Driverseat
quite far back in the car for better weight distribution and to give better
feedback to the driver as the car transitions through different corners..

http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m495/JayRockett/The%202012%20DriftIreland%20-%20DI%20Motorsport%20S14/DSCF2707.jpg

Moving onto the passenger side, the recess in the floor pan to allow clearance
for the catalytic converter prevent us from mounting the Passenger seat where
we wanted it.. So i cut it out!

Bob bent and shaped a sheet to replace the cut-out recess in the floor

Good move on relocating the drivers seat back a bit. It took me ages to get used to my Chasers driving position being so far forward after driving a supra for so long.

Ps, please do a jacking point on my car like that.

Yeah the headlight issue was the only downside to running the Intercooler this way but we mocked and measured it all up and we'll have to cut some of each headlight out a bit to allow it all to fit, so i'll just be loosing out on my full beams which wont be too necessary, main beams will do!

Here's a few photo's of the small mod's i made to the OBP Pedal Box

I didnt like the tacky silver clutch and brake pedals, and felt they
were a little to wide, so i trimmed them down like so..

Then ground them flat and stuck skateboard grip tape so my feet wont slip
from the all important clutch pedal!!:D

This is a pic of Gary "Mabbit" Mahony's Kouki S14 which will be getting stripped down and fully rebuilt
to a fairly similar spec to my car, the two of us will most likely be teaming up together for 2012!:afro:

bad design will just spread the rear chassis legs when you lift the weight of the car,

jay put in a strait bar to make a triangle

Straight bar or tube will bend if jacked from the middle from what i can see, and if I hit the passenger side it may impact on the driver side!

This one will hopefully collapse from an impact but shouldnt spread when being jacked up! Back end is quite light too!

fair play this is an epic build. cant wait to see the final result on track.

22-01-12, 23:47
if you put that jacking bar upside down on the ground measure the with of ware it bolts onto the legs then get some one to stand on the middle bit and measure it, it will have spread, i mean put a strait bar about 9-10 inches long in the middle of what you already have to make a trangle shape it will stop the push on the legs as it will be the bit under strain, and being that far down the bar "when" you hit it off a wall it will still let the bar bend,

Jay Rockett
23-01-12, 09:07
Ha, believe it or not we were jumping on it and it didnt flex at all! I want to put it in a press to be sure but i cant see it spreading tbh!

I did think of something along the lines of what you said there so once i try it in the press ill know if it needs bracing!

Yeah I have a few spare SR blocks so i might just build a VET on the side and throw it in at some stage but
the SR im building for now will still be quite a potent motor!

Car will be getting stripped the weekend.....and then have bob(DI Motorsport) to rebuild the engine:D
While I get on with lots of other things the car needs and fix problems I had from this year....
Most likely gonna have to put in a few late nights to hav it ready for round 1....
I'll sort out a rebuild thread to keep people updated on whats goin on with the car....

whats the difference in vet and the origonal sr ?

Muttly
08-02-12, 12:59
VE's have a better head than the DE. For starters the rocker system is replaced by a shaft system. Basically no more popping off rockers as they're on a shaft. The head also flows better right out of the box. You have vvl which is variable lift. If you get custom cams ground you can have it built to have early spool and then the cams change position to all for big power up top.
