View Full Version : The MCN Sport Chambers Performance SRX7 FC Build

Hey lads and lasses!
Welcome to the build thread of my new drift car, The MCNSPORT Chambers Performance SRX7 FC.
Well I guess most of ye know that my last car bit the dust at the final round of Prodrift in Fermoy last year. After that there were two options: Reshell it into another S13 or go for something completely different. I took the 2nd option after a call from Jules Chambers of Chambers Performance in Sandyford, after he and Darren McNamara had had a conversation the very same night as the crash in Fermoy.
The plan was to build a kick ass FC3S RX-7 which to be powered by an SR20 engine in association with Chambers Performance and MCNSPORT. I've wanted to build an FC with years, so I guess it's time!

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/540/15022116346873702888310.jpg

So here it is, a basic spec naturally aspirated UK model FC, complete with sunroof and a small NA diff which will explode if we try to put big power through it!

http://img806.imageshack.us/img806/2484/dsc0003j.jpg

The first step was to strip the engine and interior at Chambers Performance to make way for the new power plant and custom lightweight MCN Sport weld in cage

http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/3185/dsc0004gv.jpg

James Deane and Jules make short work of taking out the NA 13B. This would be a nice responsive engine for a road car!

http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/7291/dsc0056qm.jpg

Then, back down in Buttevant, the lightening process started with removal of the sound deadening

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/7621/dsc0160bk.jpg

Professional Formula D driver Darren McNamara is heading up chassis design and is fanatical about weight. Team mechanic Holly spent a while introducing the grinder and the air saw to the FC! All the unnecessary brackets in front of the front panel have been removed. The car isn't going to run any headlamps.

http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/243/dsc0167qw.jpg

The inner quarter panel contained four skins, two of which are left in this pic.

http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/8585/dsc0157l.jpg

About half of the metal that is to be removed is removed so far. Darren told me not to call down when the car is up on the spit and he's cutting it with the grinder! :D

http://img547.imageshack.us/img547/3578/dsc0174e.jpg

This is the way the interior looks at the moment

http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/5450/dsc0172z.jpg

Checking what offset wheels to get with some plus 50mm quarter panels laid on

http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/5996/dsc0159fa.jpg

The steering rack is above and in front of the subframe in FCs, which means that it's in the way of the sump of the SR20. The rack needs to be about 5 inches further forward or down, or the engine needs to be 5 inches further back, i.e. through the firewall. You could house a small family in the tunnel so theres no need to go cutting there!

What power are u planning to bring the SR to in this??

FC's are sweet,

What power are u planning to bring the SR to in this??

They sure are!
Im going keeping it the same as it was in the Sileighty to start with and concentrate on getting it handling right first, then up the power. So we'll be starting with 348bhp and 340ft/lbs of torque, completely standard internally! Even though theyre around 20kgs heavier than a 180 to start with we'll have it a lot lighter than the Sil was

Cant wait to see this out on track, and what the exterior turns out like. FCs gotta be my 2nd favourite car out there. Still miss mine.

I'm sure ye have all ideas and plans for the setup, and certainly some of the best in the business working on it, but maybe if you havent seen this thread before it could be a help:

It is indeed! It was just that there was a big shipment of stuff going over there and it was costing next to nothing to send it and have it sent back, but we got a few things done closer to home and as you now know we went to TDP for the hoop, which is just bent using 45 x 2.5mm T45.

We have been very busy with the last few weeks, again behind the scenes aswell as on the car. The combination of a busted laptop and the fact that there isn't a whole pile to see in the work we've been doing lately (a lot of ripping, cleaning, cutting, gathering stuff etc.) means that I didn't post up pics in a few weeks but with the arrival of the hoop from TDP tomorrow it's going to be all systems go for the next seven weeks, hopefully with plenty of interesting stuff to show. Im happy to say that the sponsorship side of things has gone really well with a lot of enthusiasm about the car and we have some new partners for the 2011 season.
Thanks a million to everyone for all the comments and support so far, when you're putting absolutely everything you have and more into a project its great to see the support from people in the circumstances, and it makes it all the more worthwhile. We have a great team involved in this from the mechanics to the chassis builders, the sponsors to the graphics designer. I cant wait for the next seven or eight mad weeks to see what way she turns out :) More pics early next week!

Hopefully lad, we will be working on it flat out for the next seven weeks. The kit is arriving in England the last week of March if the container is on time. That was the earliest I could get that kit shipped in once I decided that I was definately going with the FC rather than re-shelling. The paint will be still wet on it at round 1 ha ha!

Thanks a million lad, were putting all we have into it now. It would have been so much easier to re-shell but this just felt like the right way to go and we wanted to see what a properly built FC could do. I think theyre just awesome anyway ha ha :D The Sileighty was a great car but at the end of the day it could have been turned back into a road car straight away, all the heater stuff, glass, standard tank, electric windows etc. were still in it, it was going to be fully stripped this winter but I made shit of it first! So hopefully we will go well in a properly lightened chassis.
One of the main problems will be a lack of testing time in a car which will most likely be very different to the Sileighty to drive and will require more time to set up because the common geometry settings that work for the S bodys might not necessarily work for an FC. It means that I'll be sitting into it in the first competitive round more or less completely new to the car and will still be going 90% the first day out, but with Darren's wealth of knowledge on chassis setup I'd hope it should be good from the get go, its just a case of tweaking it to suit the driving style then.

Right boys and girdles, sorry bout the delay in getting an update posted up, with the hand being broke, working on Prodrift Round 1 and Holly giving a hand at Darren's (frankly awesome) Need For Speed D-Mac 86, we've been flat out at other things aswell as working on the FC. One of the main time consumers has been the fact that the car was a UK model FC and spent some of its years on the Isle of Wight, which has left it with quite a lot of surface rust. We decided that while were going to the lengths were going to with the this shell that we might as well get rid of all rust altogether on both the shell (although it wasnt too bad) and the subframes and arms, as the shell might last one event or it might last 10 years, so while it was up on the spit we said we would do it right if we were doing it at all. It was very time consuming but the end result is a minty fresh shell which has been treated to a nice coat of white paint on the underneath by one of my new sponsors, Daniel Hegarty of DansBodyWorx (big thanks Dan!!!) down at MCNSPORT in Buttevant on the Friday before Round 1

And so we have the 4.3:1 two way diff, and also the rear subframe with rear lower arms and modified front subframe with front lower control arms, all fitted with polyurethane bushes from another new sponsor, Mazdatrix, who are based in California (www.mazdatrix.com). We are also fitting a camber adjuster rod, toe eliminator bushes as the FCs have rear steer as standard and individual camber adjuster links left and right which are to come from Formula D driver and FC specialist Justin Pawlak.

FC, meet SR, SR, meet FC!

http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/3773/dsc0790g.jpg

Back at the end of 2010 when this project started there was no talk of any problems as far as cutting bulkheads to fit engines further back went, but now it's banned in Formula D and it looks like a lot of series in Europe might follow suit in the future. Only might though, it remains to be seen. The SR lined up pretty well as far as the gearbox tunnel side of things went. The problem is that in an S body the steering rack is behind the subframe and sits level with it height wise, and in an FC, which was designed with a compact rotary in mind, the rack sits at the front and is on top of the subframe. We knew coming into this that we had several options: Use a complete S13 front end including subframe, steering, and suspension, modifying the top shock mounts aswell to take the S13 shocks. Make a custom sump and oil pickup for the SR and move the steering rack of the FC either 70mm forwards or about 55mm downwards, extending the steering column, but this would totally alter steering geometry and by changing the angles of the steering arms it would affect things like ackermann angle, bump steer and lock, aswell as making the arms go into a bind situation early in the suspension travel and possibly putting a lot of unnecessary pressure on the steering arms. Thirdly, and most likely, we could cut the bulkhead, shove the SR with the modified sump back a few inches, cut a tunnel for the exhaust, more cutting for the gear lever, and move the wiper assembly and clutch cylinder. But this may be outlawed in the near future, abroad at least. Hmmmmmmmm....

A bit of thinking to do so, but in the mean time, cos I'm a huge size of a man, we line me up early with my seat, wheel and awesome new, long handle ASD hydraulic handbrake complete with .75 Wilwood cylinder so that we can have all the inside fabrication work done and ready for painting by Dan.

We had brackets made to fit the sear direct to the floor, but Darren produced FC specific rails which provide seat adjustability in what is a very tight cabin so they were very welcome. I like to sit high up while driving anyway but with my helmet on it's a tight fit to the cage! We decide to go with this height for the time being and we can drop it at a later date if it's too high

As always lads thanks a million for the comments and support, this is a huge project for all involved and it's obviously very draining both time and financially wise so its great to have the support. We have an awful lot to do but we will be trying our best to be out for round 2! Darren is heading to Formula D round 2 early this week so we will be doing all the inside fabrication and everything else we can until he comes back. The shocks have been sent away to AVO in the UK to have custom items made up for the FC and once we get them back we can get her back on the ground. It will be good to be back in my own car again battling! I cant wait to get into the drivers seat of this to start learning and tweaking it. And just to be sliding it of course!

Well theres been a slight change of plan! :D
There are numerous reasons for the switch to rotary power which I'll go into later on when I get a chance, but there are two simple ones which are hard to argue with:
An FC should have a rotary engine, and from listening to people and talking about it with the people who are building the car thats exactly what both the fans and ourselves want to see.
You only live once.

Well we've been busy again for the last few days! One thing I've learned since we started this project is just how long things take when you're working on a more unusual car and you're making a lot of bits yourself, it's crazy, you think 'oh yeah, well we'll get that, that and that done today' but when you go about it there are almost ALWAYS problems. We always get around them but it often requires a while thinking about how best to work it out and something being made or ordered/collected. The mileage I've racked up since I first left home to collect the FC in its NA form from Jules Chambers in Dublin is scary.
Also, it being an FC engine, it should just bolt it and wire up, right? Unfortunately, no! In order to allow the FC 13B engine (which we'll focus on in a bit) to make good power, we are using an FD upper inlet manifold, aswell as FD wiring, ignition and ECU in the shape of a Power FC. The FD upper inlet manifold needs an adapter plate to mate to the FC lower inlet manifold, and at the air intake end there are problems with the oil filler cap and the power steering pump coming in the way of the intercooler pipe etc. so unfortunately just because its an FC engine doesn't mean it's all smooth sailing!

Which brings us nicely on to the reasons for the change to rotary power! (I can hear the arguments already ha ha!)

These are just off the top of my head:
An FC should have a rotary engine

In order to fit the SR20 we would have had to either move the steering rack an awful long way forward or down or else cut the bulkhead, neither thing a very big deal, but there are unconfirmed talks of rule changes in many championships next year which will disallow the cutting of bulkheads. Cars which have already been logged with the organisation (i.e. Prodrift, Drift Allstars etc.) this year will be allowed to compete so as not to make cars which have recently been built become obsolete shortly after they have been built. I intend to compete in England when the budget allows it but at the moment, as I'm putting everything into building the car, I can't say for sure that I'm going to make it across the pond this year to log it so cutting the bulkhead could potentially let me with a car that I can't compete in England or elsewhere with. Also were starting out with a completely new chassis which will have quite a few mods and it will take a while to get it handling right, and moving the rack as much as we would have had to could have caused its own problems.

My SR20 was producing a very usable 348bhp with 340ft/lbs of torque on TDP's Dyna Pack dyno, running a Motec ECU mapped by Robbie with standard injectors. This power was enough to win the non seeded pro championship in 09 and it got 7th in seeded pro last year. The one thing was that when I came up against the faster cars, i.e. Christy, James, Mike etc. that it was ever so slightly lacking in grunt to pull the width of tyre at the low pressures I would have had to run to be able to keep up with the fastest cars with their 450-plus bhp, which made it at best a top 8 or top 4 car in seeded pro. Anyone in the know will tell you that theres a big difference between 350 and 400 horsepower, it seems to be the magic figure and by switching to a rotary I can hit that figure for a lot less money than it would have cost me to buy a bigger turbo, injectors, pump map etc. that I would have needed to get the extra power out of the SR.

I'm well aware of their reputation for poor reliability, but you have to take chances in life and we will look after it well. Its something different and it will be a steep learning curve but between Darren's knowledge of rotaries and Jules' mechanical ability on site at events it's in good hands, and Holly and myself will be keeping a close eye on everything.

The engine is the one which previously powered Darren's RE86 rotary powered AE86 which competed in a few rounds of Prodrift. This is the car that went on to become the amazing Need For Speed D Mac 86 http://speedhunters.com/archive/tags/dmac86/default.aspx
That engine is a street ported FC model 13B and were going to squeeze as many ponies as we safely can out of the Wankel!
We are going to be running on a mixture of 109 octane race fuel and petrol and it's going to be mapped by new sponsor Hayward Rotary, the same tuner who mapped the Need For Speed car.
It's a major change for me as I've been born and bred with Nissans. Heres hoping it goes well :) Thanks for your continued support

Right, time for an update! But first we must go back to, aam, go forward. Or sideways. Basically cos I didn't put up any pics of the engine until I was SURE that I was going with it, and that was when I sold my Motec that I worked long and hard for.

So heres Happy and Holly re-assembling the FC gearbox

This is the unit which is now in the car. If anyone knows how much power one of these can take for drift use, please let me know. I'm told between 400 and 450bhp but it would be great to hear from someone who has ran one of them with that kind of power

Quick update time! We have been really busy at MCNSPORT with the last while now, and I'm pleased to say that progress has been good. As is the way since this project started I'm getting an education on how to do things to the highest level, and even though this way isn't the cheapest or quickest, it is the best, and I'm sure you'll agree that the results so far are cool. Im just delighted to have such a well prepared car and I hope we can get it handling and going really well in a short space of time. However, Rome wasn't built in a day and it will probably take a while to iron out a few teething problems that you will have with any new race or drift car. At this stage the project has almost taken on the shape of Darren's Need For Speed D Mac 86's younger brother, but in simpler form. The same thinking and attention to detail which has become MCNSPORT's trademark is present in both projects and both share relatively similar engine setups, once again with the FC having a less extreme street porting job carried out.

The car is getting ever closer to being fired up, and that moment is going to be a big one for all of us. It's been a long, hard project which has been a labour of love and the amount of man hours already gone into it must be well into the thousands. At the start of the chassis work it was as much about restoration as anything else and the way that the shell alone has turned out is a testament to Holly, Happy, Darren, Dan and everyone else who was involved. Thanks lads

Ive also been without my own drift car for almost 8 months now and Ive missed having one like fcuk, and it will be a moment I'll remember for a long time hearing the 13B fire up for the first time.

So the all important blower arrived, and it's a big 'un! The bigger they are the harder they blow apparently, ahem :D

And its a special one: An Owen Developments special with a Garrett GT35R core with 4" inlet and 3" V band exhaust side, twin scroll T4 exhaust flange and .86 A/R back housing. Its a similar unit as used on many Rallycross Supercars and hopefully it should be a really good unit on the ported 13B.

http://img839.imageshack.us/img839/4659/dsc1096g.jpg

And it's mounted on a HKS twin scroll manifold with a 55mm HKS external wastegate

http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/9223/dsc1078m.jpg

The battery is a Varley Red Top 30 Amp dry cell racing battery and it has been mounted behind the passenger seat to help to give even weight distribution left to right. The batterys are available at www.mcnsport.com

We have also seam welded the rear suspension turrets

http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/4016/dsc1083e.jpg

Now these are a couple of my favourite parts of the car so far, the Barrys Motorsport flocked dash and the ASD hydraulic handbrake.
I took the dash up to Michael Barry of Barry's Motorsport on Model Farm Road in Cork with one or two holes in it (well, MAYBE ten or twelve :o) wrongly thinking that flocking is done by wrapping the dash in a vinyl wrap. It's not. Its sprayed on, so major shout out to Mike and the boys for filling all the holes and doing a perfect job of flocking all the dash for very reasonable money, which is about a million times better that the grey fake leather finish that was on it. It also prevents glare off the dash and while you have it off you can do major lightening to your car by removing all the air con and heater stuff! Give Mike a shout on 087 6704159 or go to the Barry's Motorsport trading page on driftireland at http://www.driftireland.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=53

That ASD handbrake is just a work of art and it's engineered to the highest level. ASD build, run and develop 4 of the 6 Falken Tire cars in Formula D including D Mac's awesome Saturn Sky so you can be assured that anything they produced is built to the highest level. The handbrakes can be got with mounting plates for S bodys to bolt directly to the standard handbrake mounting point on the tunnel and can be got in vertical or lie-down versions so contact www.mcnsport.com if you fancy one!

http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/9582/dsc1085y.jpg

The seats and harnesses are one of the few things to come over into the FC from the S13

http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/4779/dsc1094h.jpg

We are using 8mm braided fuel feed and return lines, again available from www.mcnsport.com

http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/8008/dsc1095a.jpg

This is the adapter plate which sits between the FC lower inlet manifold and the FD upper inlet manifold. The FC upper inlet manifold gets restrictive as power levels rise so we decided to run an FD upper, which brings its own problems, such as matching wiring, throttle cable, vacuum pipes etc. Thanks to Japanese Performance for supplying the FD parts http://www.facebook.com/JapanesePerformance

http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/2526/dsc1088r.jpg

Darren and welder extraordinaire Austin sorting out the aluminium welding

http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/9719/dsc1093i.jpg

The brakes are all plumbed up, even though they're still a small bit squishy :)

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/3842/dsc1097i.jpg

Another neat touch is the standard rear toe control arms, which have been made adjustable at MCNSPORT. They have ball joints at both ends so the standard arms are well up to the job now that they are adjustable. The new adjustable camber links are also in place.

http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/8899/dsc1101.jpg

http://img813.imageshack.us/img813/5381/dsc1112g.jpg

The next part is the fun part: Wiring! Once that is done its over to another new sponsor, Hayward Rotary www.mazdarotary.co.uk for mapping on the Apexi Power FC. We have decided to run 109 octane race fuel, with a petrol to race fuel ratio of 2:1. This is going to be expensive, but rotaries like the stuff and it will keep charge temp and overall temperatures down so the way I'm looking at it is it will be cheaper than melting a rotor tip. All going well by next week we will have a video of the car being driven down the road outside McNamaras.
Go big or go home ;)

Thanks again. Its after frightening me how much work has gone into it as its our first car building from the ground up. Time means nothing. A job you think will take an hour takes two hours, a day takes two days etc.
My thoughts on the lads are at the start of the next thread. What a gang of legends.
And I dont have deep pockets lad, far from it in fact, but I have great sponsors who I worked hard to get and who I continue to work hard for, to whom I am eternally grateful, because without them, there is no drifting for me. I also broke almost every penny of what was left of the Sileighty into this
and I basically sacrifice my everyday life in order to drift at the top level and to build this car. Its what I do. Yeah times are tough but you only live once, so you might as well live.

Its five to two on the Wednesday night before Punchestown. Im sitting writing this in the shop at MCNSport while the boys continue to work on the car next door in the garage. I doing just about the only thing I'm any use at at this stage, and after what seems like weeks and weeks of getting up early and going to bed late with nothing in between but working on the car, organising stuff for the car of driving somewhere for stuff for the car, we are all pretty wrecked.
The song 'I Need Air' that Cazeli used in his Mondello vid from last year just came on the radio outside. Darren just came in, looking for the wiring loom that was used in the RE86, which was the car that my new engine last lived in. Fresh from his third place in Formula D round 3 in Miami last weekend, he might have an advantage on the rest of us sleep wise maybe, if hes still five hours behind? :)
Ok, Im too tired to write anything with any thought in it, so as they work and have a laugh outside at ten past two, heres the low down on the boys, with a big 'thanks to' before each ones name:
Darren for his endless supply of knowledge and know how and his insistence of doing everything correctly. His overseeing of the project has led to it taking the shape you see in this thread. Im humbled to have such a well built car to drive and Im looking forward to developing it with him. He is one of the best drifters in the world and I can only hope that a bit of his talent and drive will rub off on me. If it does I will be all the better driver for it and I wish him all the best on his way to the Formula D championship. Happy Darren for his fabrication and mechanical skills and his ability to eye up a problem, think for 5 seconds, and come up with and execute the perfect solution there and then. His work on the Need For Speed car speaks for itself and im very grateful to have a man of his ability working on my drift car. The man is also a saint. And the team mechanic Holly, whom I have been friends with with 14 years and have traveled many miles with on bikes over the years, but who only came on the drifting scene last year and fell into place like a missing piece of a puzzle on our team. Without Holly this car would not be where it is today. He is the do-er of the team, while I would be thinking about something Hol would have it done. When my hand was broke I drove him down every day and he worked and worked while I could only look on. The man is an absolute legend and this car is as much his as it is mine. He has now inherited my drag race bike, an RD350 LC2 powervalve which has the nuts tuned off its two stroke engine. We are going to restore and rebuild it at our ease once we have finished the FC and I'm going to enjoy helping him build it as he has helped me build my drift car. Im also going to enjoy watching him at the line before he goes on to beat another modern 600cc sports bike with his little 350 screamer! I need to individually thank a LOT of other people, but all in good time!

ALso this week the courier delivered the kit in BITS, all broken from a lack of care while handling. Thanks to the ever patient Dan Hegarty for repairing everything, which took a good day, only to apply the sweet shade of red to get a reaction in the paint. We rubbed it all down, Dan applied another coat, only for the same thing to happen. The problem was traced to bad paint from the motor factors. As if time wasnt short enough! Well we gotta soldier on! All these pics were taken tonight.

I personally want to see Mike Fitz kick ass in this car for a few simple reasons.... :D

1. He is genuinely 120% grateful to anyone who has helped him out with the car. Down to the smallest things, its plain to see that everyone's efforts, big or small are greatly appreciated by Mike. Which is brilliant to see.

2. He has managed to build an absolutely top class car that most of us can only dream about without the use of a blank cheque book and more through hard work and huge sacrifice's, all for one car... along with the help and guidance of some very very talented friends who deserve major credit for their work..

3. Because he has built a completely outside the box car as far as the irish drift scene is concerned.. Stepping into unknown water which is helping to keep the series fresh, interesting and moving forward.

4. And just coz its well cool........

Hands up who's not gona smile when they hear Mike screamin off the start line and up towards the first clipping point in this..

Brakes? What brakes? Have you not seen the test video? You wont need brakes,Its all go:cool:

On a serious note,Some dude to build a car and look and work from outside the box!

Between this and the NFS 86 you have rolled out some pieces this year!

Thank you sir, when youre tired and broke and questioning are you mad to be doing what youre doing its comments like this remind you what its all about. While we were on the way back down to Buttevant with the trailer at 6 o clock Friday morning after pulling an all nighter Holly had the laptop out and he read out this comment. Thanks again ;)

After months and months of work, a broken hand and a complete change of plan engine wise later, the RX-7 FC3S has fired up! That was Thursday week, and after an all nighter at MCNSport we made it up to Drift Jam in Punchestown to get the new car out on track for the first time.

Before I get to that, Id like to point out something: After coming out of Darren's RE86, being fitted with various FD parts such as the upper inlet manifold, ignition system, custom wiring and Power FC, with a map that was put on that ECU by Hayward Rotary in England with the ECU arriving that day, and the engine filled with the best part of a litre of automatic transmission fluid by Darren to clean any carbon that had built up on the seals, the 13B fired up on the second turn of the starter. I could barely believe it. All the work. The worry of changing to a rotary for a man who had been reared with pistons, with nothing more to rely on than a man's word and encouragement and a mentality that was saying 'go big or don't bother building it', it was here, in the bay in MCNSport where Darren's Need For Speed car had been built into what it is, alive in front of me. Not even a wiring or vacuum problem. Just an even tickover (and a LOT of smoke from the ATF!). Relief? You could say that :o

So after various checks for leaks and an adjustment to the exhaust angle where it meets the V Band on the turbo, it was time to wheel it out. Happy Darren done the honours, and for the first time since it was a standard NA FC, the RX drove out the doors of MCNSport as a very different beast to when it came in. This is what it sounded like:

And so we made it to Punchestown, Darren, Holly and me bleary eyed in the Transit, Happy having to go home and put on a few arms on his SR20 R32 and get it down off axle stands to get it to Punchestown aswell.
After more brake bleeding (a favourite pastime of the previous night) Holly and me took the car for its first power runs to see if the HKS external wastegate would hold the Owen Developments special at a safe bar, which it did without any adjustment, it was time to get out on track.
With the rev clock delivery being late I did'nt have any gauge as to what revs I was at except my ears, and with the shriek of this thing it was easy to think that you were revving the nuts off it all the time. All the same, it felt fast but it was running out of revs fast, the boost threshold very narrow and hitting a brick wall of fuelling. This could have been a number of things, but was quickly traced to too much fuel pressure. A drop of 10 psi and we went for another run.
Oh my God.
I have driven a lot of cars in my time, through writing for Modified Motors, teaching in the Prodrift Academy, just being in the scene, but this is honestly the most responsive engine I have ever driven in a car. Now it's early days, and reliability is the first priority, but I couldnt help by being blown away by the sheer willingness of the thing to REV! That and the fact that it feels like its between 420 and 450bhp on my extremely accurate arse-dyno! You just couldnt help being excited driving the thing. And also turbo lag is non-existent. I had heard Darren and other people raving about rotaries, and I had driven a few single turbo FDs which were really good, but felt a little lacking in torque, but from the little test I've had in this Im really happy.
In the name of reliability and a bit of power we are running a petrol/race fuel mix, which will help keep charge temperatures down and detonation, the rotaries enemy, at bay.
One thing that I'm in awe of is Hayward Rotary's map. Carl Hayward has never seen this car. The plan was for him to come over and map the car in real world conditions in Mondello, but when he heard what turbo we were using and we were running race fuel, and due to the fact that he was simply flat out with work, he said he could put a safe, rich map on the ECU to get us going, taking into account the street port and all the other bits to run the car until he could come over and check it out. He got it spot on. Its as crisp as a two stroke Tayto. Carl Hayward, I salute you! :D
Now the flip side is that the FC tried to kill me several times! We had really old Tein coilovers on the back to get us going until the AVOs arrive and the Teins were sprung for a tank or something, not a severely lightened FC! This mated with standard-ish steering lock and wrong offset wheels with spacers on the front and a lack of castor adjustment and only rough geometry settings meant the car was extremely difficult to drift on the bumpy circuit.
And another reason why it was so dangerous to drive up there: The grip. The way this thing puts down power is just crazy. Press the throttle and it tries to leapfrog in the direction the car is facing. Im after getting a major lesson in weight, both getting rid of it and where to put what youre keeping.
So at this stage Strait Talkin' Dan is painstakingly going over the paint again and we know what weve got to do to get her handling right. Its not going to be easy and will require testing, which is expensive when youre burning race fuel, but its gotta be done. Straight away I can tell that it's not going to be an easy car to drive and is going to require a totally different driving style to what Im used to, but that can only make you a better driver in the long run.
This things got potential.

Got another quick spin in the car last night and its crazy responsive! Its also crazy snappy though! Ive driven my share of drift cars at this stage, admittedly mostly S bodys but also Skylines, Twin Cams, a few of the bigger Toyotas aswell, but I've never driven anything as sensitive as this to driver inputs. One of the reasons on the steering side is that the power steering system were using has a variable pressure system which is speed sensitive, so when the car is stopped it offers a lot of assistance but when it's doing, say, 100mph it offers much less. Obviously this isn't ideal for drifting so we bypassed it, but now it thinks the car is always stopped, so the steering in unbelievably light when you're on the go. We'll sort it out in time, but for now, its a matter of getting used to it.
Also the FC3S is a bit tight in around the front arches when you start to get some extra lock in there, so a narrow set of 17" low offset wheels may have to be sourced. We are modifying the hubs tonight and were heading for Mondello on Friday for our first proper test, so I can't wait to get some settings dialled in and get some time in the drivers seat and make friends with this beast! :D
