Right about time I got this thread up, I bought this S2000 a little while back with some rear damage and with no engine, box or loom. Meself and John (the bro) decided that this was the car to build into a proper fast drift car even tho the setup could take a while, and it will be different:D

So the plans for the car at the min are.....

Forged F20c with linered block for the boost
Full-race exhaust manifold depending on funds
In around Gt30/35r size blower with custom housings
E46 M3 6 speed box
GTR Skyline rear diff and custom shafts
Suspension I haven't decided on yet
MoTeC M84 ECU with launch controll, anti lag, lambda controll
Pedal box
Full custom TDP T45 roll cage
Evo 7 Brembo 4pot front Brembo 2pot rear with custom TDP bells and disc's

Parts I have aquired,,,,,,
F20c engine:D
GTR diff and shafts
Brembo front calipers
Pedal box,,,,,

That is the basic outline of the setup but the main difference of this build is the time I am spending on the chassis, every un-necessary kg is coming out of the car as you will see from the pics:D

Anyway I will explain everything in detail as I get through the build,

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1312.jpg
The car had to go to the body shop first because the back chassis needed a little pull:eek:
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1311.jpg
And this is how it came back,,,, The stripping started,,
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1314.jpg
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1315.jpg
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1316.jpg
All the basic stripping done,
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1325.jpg
Front subframe out,
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1326.jpg
Rear subframe out,
This is where the weight saving starts:cool: There is alot of excess chassis bracing in the S2000 due to having no roof, so all of it has to go:) The new cage will do all the bracings job and better,,, and away we go on the spot welds:mad:
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1327.jpg
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1328.jpg
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1329.jpg
Alot of the underneath strenghtning can go too,
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1330.jpg
Time to get the sills off, a whole lot of not nice heavy side impact protection in behind them that needs to go,
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1332.jpg
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1333.jpg
After a whole shit load of spot welds, finally got one side done and set into the other side,
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1334.jpg

Thats all the pics for this week will have more at the weekend I hope, it takes so much time removing chassis parts because of the spot welds il keep you all updated as much as possible!

Is the 5spd stronger though? Aren't they the same as a 328i box?? The few weeks i had my '28 the box started to get notchy.. Also John Mac in his PD M3 has broken a few of em... I would have thought the E46 box be the job... But an E39 M5 box be the right job wouldn't it??

Right lads, only got back at this today had a busy week,,,

I have since sorted a loan of a oem Honda hard-top so i can get a fiberglass copy made, this is going to save me alot of money towards buying a oem or after market hard top:D

I also sorted a E36 M3 6speed getrac gearbox today:D couldnt find an E46 one for decent money so going to pick this up during the week,,,,

Right back to getting rid of evil weight:p I started into the drivers side sill today to get rid of all the side impact protection and some other stuff,,

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1358.jpg
This is how it looked starting this morning,,,,

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1360.jpg
this is after a few 1mm grinder disc's and a shit load of spot welds,,,

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1361.jpg
Here is some more chassis strenghtning that wont be needed and is quite heavy material,,,

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1362.jpg
And its gone,, pain in the arse getting this part off both sides...

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1363.jpg
And finally for today I had the bar for mounting the radiator and a big heavy piece of multi layer box section between the chassis legs,,

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll109/jstoneracing/103_1364.jpg
So got rid of them and will replace them with light roll cage tubing,,

Took 40kg's out of the car today,,
And I am looking into getting all fiberglass panels, doors, boot door, quarter panel's the lot but will know more next week;)

Thats it for today, should have all the chassis lightening done by next weekend and will be getting it up to TDP for its custom roll-cage:D
Il update again next weekend,,,,,,,,,,;)

Some project Brendan, Gonna be savage

E46 M3 and E39 M5 6 speed manuals are the same gearbox apart from having different bellhousings (which are interchangable anyway(

E36 328 and 3L M3 gearbox are the same but they are ZF and much tougher than the Getrag 6 speed E36 M3 Evo gearbox. John made bits of his Evo box

The E46/E39 Getrag 6 speed is a lot stronger than the E36 one as it has bigger shafts and stronger bearings but I'm not sure if its really worth it considering they are expensive and if you break it, your screwed whereas E36 5 speed boxes are plentiful and can be picked up for 150 quid or so.

I have an E46 M3 gearbox in my E30 318iS but its only a roadcar.

Also the fact that clutches are much easier to get for the E36 boxes as the splines are abit of a prick to get a clutch to suit on the E46 or E39 M5 boxes.

Your going to make bits of the layshafts and synchros on the E36 box to be honest as they aren't upto alot of abuse... but then again, the F20 won't have as much torque and its a realtively light car.

Going to be a sweet car once done! :)

Yea I talked to j.p about boxes alright he was saying he broke 1 or 2 6speeds alright but he said he gave them awfull abuse:D I know meself I will prob break the 36 box but at least if I make an adapter plate I can get a 46 box afterwards and bang it in:D
It will have not so much torque but more power and revs which will help but it's really wait and see, if I have trouble il get a 46 box,,,
Thanks for the info tho,,,,

DaveM-sport
31-01-11, 15:33
E46 box won't go straight in as the clutches are different. Everything else is the same though.

Also, unless you plan on using 6th gear, the 6 speed box will make no difference whatsoever as 1st-5th is the same in both E36 3L M3 and 3.2 Evo. The E46 has very slightly different gearing then for 1st and 6th but it's only the difference of +/- 0.05 or so in ratios.

Personally I'd go with the 5 speeds as they at easy to replace. If you break the 6 speed your stuck with trying to find a replacement E36 6 speed at a cost of 300 quid at the very least and I have seen E46 boxes go or 700-1000 unless your lucky. I bought an engine and box together to make mine valu go money :p

Then I you do break the 6 speed and can't find one youll be having to redo the prop, gear-linkages an mountings for a 5 speed if your running out of time for an event etc.

John broke the original Evo box in the M3, I used it in my iS for test fitting before I bought a good one after he took it out and put in the 5 speed to the M3.
He broke 3rd in a 5 speed as well though but that gearbox might not have been great to start with and he was doing 3rd gear rings :D

That's justy opinion of it anyway. I'm shut you know what you are at anyway an it'll turn out well either way :)

Thinners... brush it on good and heavy let it soak in and then keep brushing it and it should come off easy enough.. i've done a few car like that now, its messy and you'd prob use a gallon of thinners, but sure its cheap stuff,

I got my FD RX7 steering rack aswell,,
I also got 2 GTR rear hubs off 200sx on here and we decided to put a GTR rear subframe in the car to make it all just bolt in, so if anything ever gets damaged, original GTR parts will bolt straight in and it's strong as fook:D
By the end of this week the shell will be ready to make it's way to work (TDP) for it's quite special custom roll cage...... I will update again soon as I can...............

Stonie
28-03-11, 22:04
Ok, a little update at long last, after a hectic week in work last week we didn't get near this but got straight onto it thisevening,,, John has a fairly savage cage design drawn up for the car as it's not easy make an S2000 fully caged easy to get a big 6' 5" fucker like me into it:D so il put up detailed pics of the whole cage build as it will be quite special,,,

So first off John dropped four tubes down in the rear chassis legs right over the four subframe mounting bolts, this makes the rear chassis super strong as alot of torque will be travelling through the rear subframe:D
http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k540/Stonie3/0dd39b4b.jpg

Each tube is dropped down inside the chassis leg and welded off on top of the subframe bolts,,
http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k540/Stonie3/f32fa059.jpg

Then it was onto the bases for the main hoop, these need to be proper strong as I intend to use the car for the odd hill climb and sprint swell so safety is essential, this is the base plate,,,,
http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k540/Stonie3/44de0ab9.jpg

Not alone is the car getting the normal plate welded to a strong chassis point, like here,
http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k540/Stonie3/e4d78874.jpg
http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k540/Stonie3/a7b96356.jpg

But it has a tube welded to the top plate and then dropped down through two more pieces of chassis and welded off,, this makes it super strong!!
http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k540/Stonie3/3585d74b.jpg
http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k540/Stonie3/b20f7565.jpg

We got the main hoop mounted up and welded off in place,,,,
http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k540/Stonie3/72cf5fec.jpg
http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k540/Stonie3/dbba7116.jpg

To get the seat low enough the original exhaust tunnel had to go, so a nice folded plate went in instead,,
http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k540/Stonie3/a712fedc.jpg

Will keep updates all through the cage build,,,

Cheers for the comments lads:D

Another brief update, il try to put as many pics of the fabrication work up as I can to give a rough idea of the time and work going into this car,,,,
Trying to get an hour in the mornings before work and an hour or two in the evenings is all we can manage at the minute as we are flat out busy down in TDP, so that will explain why the cage is taking a little longer than usual,,

http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k540/Stonie3/6ae44585.jpg

http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k540/Stonie3/d03277ae.jpg

Final year in college, working on other peoples cars and work at home has kinda fooked up things in terms of time and funds :o
Would have had it almost done this year as wasn't planning on going back for another year at first but may as well when I had the chance.

Over the summer and next Autumn, I'll be making a good stab at it though.

Ok, got another very important bit of the fab work done over the weekend, again John showed his super-duper fabrication skills when I gave him an S2000 subframe and a skyline GTR subframe and away he went cutting,,,, this was also at home in our own garage so we had no car to check it on even,, but John as usual had it all in his head and magically produced this,,,,,,,,,,,

A GTR S2000 subframe,,

It also ended up lighter that the original S2K jobby,

I'm delighted to have this done and will be hopefully fitting the engine and gearbox this week to get the mounts all fabbed up,,,,,

Just found this thread tonight and read from 1-24. My thoughts on page 2 we're epic, can't wait for the 20's. Fuck you and your weak feet Mr stone :)

The cage is nothing short of greatness. The rear looks to be a complicated mix of cuts and welds and looks like a whole lot of thought went into it. The side bars are awesome.

Great thread for learners (like me) to pic up a few hows and whys. I look forward to reading more in time.

Best of luck with the rest of your build.
Keith.

Right so, I got John to do a bit on this for me this week because I can't get near it lately just can't get the time,, so he finished off putting the sills back on, I have another shell that I got rear quarter panels and back panel from and he mocked the whole lot up and has it all tacked in place, he will have it all welded up and rear panel strengthened with tubes connected to the cage,,,

So it's starting to look like a car again,,
