ok, il soon be going turbo so i thought i better start a project thread, i have the car about 2 years, its a 1990 1.6 import. It was stolen/recovered with a small bit of damage to the front left wing and a little wiring damage, the owner was only getting around €1000 from the insurance for it. I got it for €1000 because he wanted it to go to someone that had an interest in them and would mind it (get more use out of it), it had cusco coilovers, new alloys/tyres,full performance exhaust inc manifold, HKS filter and a few other bits plus it was one of the cleanest id seen. The damage to the wing was not bad but i got a new oem one and got it sprayed/fitted and fixed the wiring myself

I've also fitted a carbon fibre Garage Vary bonnet and lightweight hardtop with perspex window, this could be carbon too but its hard to tell as its painted black and you can only see a tiny bit under the paint on the edge.

The plan for the turbo is a reliable 200bhp, I already have a GReddy manifold, custom downpipe with T25 flange that i got made in America by ARTech, also got his oil/coolent line kit. I have Saab 390cc injectors, FMIC, GReddy E-Manage blue ecu with proper harness and software for tuning/changes, should soon have a GReddy boost controller and OEM wideband O2 system too so the main thing really left is the T25/T28 turbo and getting it all fitted.http://i420.photobucket.com/albums/pp285/mx5ideways/ARTechdownpipe4-1.jpghttp://i420.photobucket.com/albums/pp285/mx5ideways/ARTechdownpipe1-1.jpghttp://i420.photobucket.com/albums/pp285/mx5ideways/ARTechdownpipe2.jpg

Picked up another 2 mx5s since though, a white mk2 rs, and a 1995 mk1 shell that I'm going to use as the base for the track car (clean shell nothing at all on it so can just build it to the spec I want and keep it as light as possible)

The wheels won't be left that color, want to paint the insides of them black, plus I need to find another one as I damaged one and dont think it's repairable, so if anyone knows of any mim 15" alloys for sale let me know, or else 2 ats cups (very alike, not the same but they'll do)

mx5ideways

Here's some pics of the shell I picked up, the engine and gearbox that's going to be used is from the rx8 that Brendan bought for his project, its the 231 bhp model with the 6sp gearbox so should be plenty powerful in a seriously lightened mx5 shell, Andrew has my shell now at the moment along with the rx8 so looking forward to seeing some progress although im in no real rush to get it built, they will be 2 very interesting projects.

It cost just 240 euro second hand off a fella on the mx5ireland site, there was no bolts or base plates with it but that was easy sorted, it's a 6 point carbing cage inc door bars, very light too. Sometimes they come up for sale on the mx5nutz forum so keep an eye there

Ya their some fun to drive, and cheap to run, roundabouts can be great craic in the wet and with the top down in the summer it feels like your going a lot faster then you are, I've been into them for a few years and can't see myself ever selling them either, I should have about 200bhp maybe more in the mk1 when I get it back and the insurance is only about 150 euro in it cause it's over 20 years old! My mk2 rs is very fast too with 148bhp standard, and comfortable aswell as an everyday car. A lot of people don't like them and that's fair enough, each to their own and all that but most of them haven't even driven them.

haydomiata

A place in portloais that specialise in classic insurance, 'brophey and co', think you need to be over 25 and have another car insured on a different policy and it's limited mileage aswell, I forget what my limit is but it isn't their lowest option anyway, I've the 1990 mk1 and a 1990 Honda crx dualcarb insured fully comp with them for 306, and I told them the mk1 had a turbo fitted! I'm insured on the 99 rs with aviva but that's around 1000 fully comp which is abit much as I'm 30 but I can't really complain as I've the 3 of them insured for 1300

I don't have them with me (their at the home place) but here's a pic of them, it's not a great pic but you can get an idea of the size of them, I'd say il need arches for some of the wheels to clear, should look well with a nice set of arches though.

Ya it was seriously thirsty that day for some reason, it's not as bad now, il get around 450/500km for a tank of 60/65, it's a lot heavier on juice than the 1.6 though. The 6 speed gearbox is sweet, pulls really well through all the gears, she's more tail happy than the 1.6 too, can be very tricky in the wet

That was the kit I was hoping to use on my 13b mx5 project if I went ahead with it. Basically that full kit, project-G side skirts, canards on the front, diffuser on the rear (custom style one rather than just a rx7 style one), mahoosive rear wing, and d-max style bonnet vent. Would be sick with the right wheels and in a darkish colour. :(

Some of the work that his done is fitted the GReddy manifold, s13 turbo and ARTech downpipe (some fitment issues but he sorted that) , fitted the front mount intercooler and repaired brackets on the alu rad, fitted Toyota beams injectors from an altezza, a Volkswagen actuator, the turbo intake is from a 200sx, the coolent return pipe and front flange are from an sti impreza, he also removed the center box in the exhaust and fitted my carbing rollcage. The bits that are left to do are fit the GReddy E-Manage blue ecu, fit the wideband o2 system, fit the GReddy profec b boost controller and boost gauge, fit the oil cooler and oil filter relocation kit, his missing some t-clamp or something too, not sure what for though and needs to fit the air filter somewhere properly

Fitted my omp steering wheel and tried to fit the quick release hub too but couldnt get it on without the omp boss which meant the wheel was sticking out way too far so il have to get a different short boss kit or adaptor for the snap off :( http://i420.photobucket.com/albums/pp285/mx5ideways/photo-145.jpg

I'm pissed off with the limited seat travel cause of the carbing cage plus I'm going to have to get a flush fitting bolt and wrap it well so I don't gash my head, half temped to sell it again but then il have holes left in the floor and have to try and make/buy other rollbars, hopefully it will be sorted buy doing the above and maybe getting a lower seat, il try that first. http://i420.photobucket.com/albums/pp285/mx5ideways/photo-147.jpg

I had the same problem when I tried to fit a snap off onto my car in the end I left the boss kit and put a flat steering wheel onto it but I have seat ordered from Italy now so I'll be changing it to set it up with that seat now soon

Had a bit of a $h!t day today, got up early to put the bonnet on the car and put everything into it before I brought it to trackday performance, had it all sorted then it wouldn't start (battery dead), my friend that was going to tow me up was running late but he had leads so I got him to bring them. That was grand went to meet him at the shop and stood into dog shit I didn't see on a patch of grass outside the shed  didn't realize it until I was halfway there and it was already on the mat and stinking out the car  . Anyway we got going abit later then hoped, towed the car abit of the way but the tow rope was abit short plus we going abit slow to make it before 6 so I said we'll drive it away, be grand! drove up fine most of the way, got lost in one or two places but found the right road to trackday, thought I better pull in for a drop of petrol about 5 mins away from his place in case I ran out, left the car running for 2 or 3 mins before I switched it off to cool it, came out of the shop, started it up and as I was leaving the petrol station smoke started coming out of the engine bay  popped the bonnet, flames all over the turbo! Thank god I had a fire extinguisher in the car, quenched it before it did any serious damage. Towed it the rest of the way, went into the wrong ind estate, went to come back out and the gates out were locked with just a keypad to open them  so after finding someone with the key code we finally got to trackday, what a day!

I didn't try starting it again, the lads had a quick look at it at trackday and they found the cause of it, Jomo had run the oil line for the turbo right over it which wouldn't have lasted anyway cause of the heat but as well as that he had cut a small notch out of the heat shield for it to go through which cut the oil line cause of the vibrations, I was lucky I wasn't driving on the motorway or the whole car could have been gone up in smoke

Tell me about it! Some waste of time and money, the money I gave him, the cost of all the trips going up and down to him, the phone calls and everything, would have been cheaper for me to bring it to England get it turbod, mapped and get a fully built engine too for the money I've spent on it here and it's still going to cost me more, let's just hope trackday performance can finally sort it. Ya I must call and drop over a few more crx bits I found, I might be home in the next few days, got the Coilovers on the rs today, needs to be tracked and drop the back a bit more but it's some job already, way lower, handles sweet and not too hard, how's the Rex?

Robbie in TDP wanted me to get a new exhaust for this before he mapped/tuned it because the one that was on it was very restrictive- 3" downpipe going to 2 1/2" mid pipe to 2" backbox with a lot of bends on top of that, pricing decent exhausts was working out way more than I had hoped with prices ranging from 4 or 500 to 1000 and that wasn't including shipping so I decided to get one made up, bought a universal 3" backbox and flanges off eBay and sourced some nice 3" stainless from my brother, my brother was going to make it up but without having the car it was going to be very awkward to make it up and be sure it was going to fit so I just dropped everything to robbies place yesterday. Hopefully he'll be able to make up a nice straight free flowing exhaust with what I gave him
