View Full Version : My New 2011 Drift Car Build SR-AE86
chrisbrady325

After a good year’s drifting and plenty of problems in 2010, I thought I would spice things up a little and go for something I always wanted after a lot of thinking and phone calls in November I decided what exactly I wanted for the 2011 drifting season, I picked up this jap ae86 bare shell of Premier Performance Cars in Monaghan, the shell was in fair good condition with very little tidying needed,
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/607/shellt.jpg (http://img407.imageshack.us/i/shellt.jpg/)
Over the christmas season with plenty of time on my hands we decided to tackle into get the shell prep'd for seam welding,

In Around Chassis Leg
http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/1749/076ve.jpg (http://img5.imageshack.us/i/076ve.jpg/)
We Never tried anything like this before so it's all new to us, i was lucky plenty of my friends were around to help!First Bit of Seam Welding in Around Front Arch where we removed all the bits that wasnt needed, and made plenty of room to allow for extra lock :)
http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/782/104lu.jpg (http://img197.imageshack.us/i/104lu.jpg/)
And Some seam welding on the underbody floor
http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/2663/106yj.jpg (http://img687.imageshack.us/i/106yj.jpg/)
After all welding was complete underneath we gave it a nice light grinding down to get it rerady to be sealed and some gravi-tex to keep it nice and tidy. Even Got the Girlfriend out helping me many hands make light work :p
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/3865/124xo.jpg (http://img11.imageshack.us/i/124xo.jpg/)
When the seam sealer had dried it was time for 3 coats of gravi-tex again the proved she could do more than horse riding!
http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/8813/137qm.jpg (http://img96.imageshack.us/i/137qm.jpg/)
This is how it turned out when it had dried up, Notice i have removed the rear tramp bar holders and the frame for the panrod arm to allow me to fit the 180sx subframe
http://img813.imageshack.us/img813/8762/140p.jpg (http://img813.imageshack.us/i/140p.jpg/)
Here's a Pic of the Rear Arches we cut a folded them up then tacked them with a small bit of weld
http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/2966/027qy.jpg (http://img412.imageshack.us/i/027qy.jpg/)
http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/610/033go.jpg (http://img337.imageshack.us/i/033go.jpg/)
After A smooth skim of fibreglass and a lick of pawn
http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/6453/0342d.jpg (http://img267.imageshack.us/i/0342d.jpg/)
I had a man lined up to make my cage but when the pressure was put on he wasnt going to have it ready in time, so we said we'd give it a go ourself.. actually turned out pretty damn good for our first cage!
http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/8279/032eg.jpg (http://img708.imageshack.us/i/032eg.jpg/)
http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/2706/049cv.jpg (http://img197.imageshack.us/i/049cv.jpg/)
Brought it through to the top of the front strut
http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/9118/048ta.jpg (http://img26.imageshack.us/i/048ta.jpg/)
Time For a touch of paint :)
http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/476/014dt.jpg (http://img600.imageshack.us/i/014dt.jpg/)
Not Much More for us to do while waiting on MCN Sport to fit the rear subframe so we got it ready to paint around the engine bay and the door frames.. my dads pretty handy with the spray gun he did panel beating for 16 years so he was more than happy to help me out!
http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/3707/150cr.jpg (http://img690.imageshack.us/i/150cr.jpg/)
http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/739/149yd.jpg (http://img211.imageshack.us/i/149yd.jpg/)
I was going to spray the engine bay black and in around the doors black, but i came across a little bit of a flip paint i had whne a green/gold tint in it( looks great when up close pics dont show it atal really..
http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/7857/151jt.jpg (http://img840.imageshack.us/i/151jt.jpg/)
http://img547.imageshack.us/img547/763/152ov.jpg (http://img547.imageshack.us/i/152ov.jpg/)
Thats all for Now people the car is currently in the hand of MCN Sport and Damien Mulvey motors where there is a serious amount of work and updates to be completed updates coming as the progress begins :)

We have started Mister Brady's IRS conversion
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i278/racershaven/photo-24.jpg
There is 4 boxes going into the floor where the rear seats used be. These 2 are for the 180sx subframe to clear the floor at the front of the diff
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i278/racershaven/photo-25.jpg
And these 2 are for the traction arm mount on the subframe
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i278/racershaven/photo-26.jpg
we have also triangulated the rear chassis to give us a strong platform for the rear subframe mounts

OK the all nighter has been pulled and got more done

This is how the boxes look from the inside
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i278/racershaven/photo-31.jpg
Now fully welded in. Excess metal will be trimmed later and subframe mounting points made

Just a small teaser of some of the parts being supplied by MCN Sport which can be viewed on the website www.mcnsport.com
http://img560.imageshack.us/img560/514/rearcoilovers.jpg (http://img560.imageshack.us/i/rearcoilovers.jpg/)
The AVO/ MCNSPORT Rear Coilover System was developed by Darren McNamara through years of ae86 competition to out perform all other ae86 suspension. The Rear Coilover System was created to provide the advantages of height adjustable coilover systems and improve on other manufacturers poor designs. The AVO/ MCNSPORT Rear Coilover System fits perfectly to the rear of the ae86 without any modifications to the chassis or axle. The AVO/ MCNSPORT Rear Coilover System has full dampening adjustment and comes with a poly bushed axle mount and poly top bushes. These are specially designed to work with the ae86 chassis and will out perform all other ae86 suspension no problem.
http://img806.imageshack.us/img806/7198/lowercontrolfrontarms.jpg (http://img806.imageshack.us/i/lowercontrolfrontarms.jpg/)
The best after market Front Lower Control arms for the AE86. The advantages of these arms are: -Solid Metal bushes for zero slop and deflection -On car length adjustable for wider track -Rose jointed anti-roll bar link -Light weight design, much lighter than similar products available on the market
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/619/tensionrods.jpg (http://img141.imageshack.us/i/tensionrods.jpg/)
These SP-Tec Tension Rods allow you to adjust the Castor of your front suspension. These units are on car adjustable and replace the rubber bushes of the factory Tension Rod with a Rose Jointed metal bush; This prevents any movement forward or back of the front wheels, they are also Zink coated for rust protection - The Best Tension Rod\'s on the market by a clear mile and a Must for any AE86 owner
http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/7222/rollcenteradjusters.jpg (http://img820.imageshack.us/i/rollcenteradjusters.jpg/)
These RCA\'s are designed to get rid of bump steer on your lowered AE86, it returns the Roll Centre of the vehicle to a more preferable position which aids handling and weight transfer - Help you get the most out of your AE86 front suspension
http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/369/overangleinnertierods.jpg (http://img811.imageshack.us/i/overangleinnertierods.jpg/)
The Uras Extra Lock over angle tie Rods are the one we personally use on our famous MCNSPORT Drift ae86\'s. Because of they\'re high quality we have had no wear in 5 years of competition with this product. You cannot drift an ae86 properly without extra steering angle
http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/2005/outertierods.jpg (http://img717.imageshack.us/i/outertierods.jpg/)
These Nagisa Auto Outer Tie Rods are the best on the market. These are much lighter than other aftermarket outer tie rods and are still extremely strong. They come with high quality metal bushes and rubber boots to prevent moisture and dirt from entering the bush. They are both right and left hand thread for easy adjustment and also correct the bump steer on lowered ae86\'s. A must for track or drift
http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/5003/willwoodbrakekit.jpg (http://img232.imageshack.us/i/willwoodbrakekit.jpg/)
This Big Brake Kit is a direct bolt on for the AE86 Corolla and features 280MM crossdrilled rotors, Wilwood Forged Dynalite Calipers and stainless steel lines. You can choose pad choice from street/sport to full race.
Other Bits to follow when made, Fuel Cell, Exhaust, Front Coilovers, Kit etc..

Fittent the solid alu bushes Chris provided. These make things a little tricky as there is no give what so ever and you must be perfect with your mount positions

You might notive thats an s14 camber arm in a s13 subframe. Well in the ae86 we use the s14 camber arms and swap them over so the left silvia arm is on the right and right on left. This allows us to use the Original ae86 suspension mount in th e floor and means you dont have to turret the rear end etc.

Serious build lad, i never realised there was as much cuttin to get the sub frame up tight to the body!!.......savage tidy job though. did y use a 180sx four stud set up so you can use twin cam wheesl??......or does it matter??

I'm speachless! Your car is going to be epic Chris! Does Dmac sleep at all no?!
just want the best handling set up i can have really lad, the s14 i thought was great, but was talking to ffrenchie the other night and he was laughing sayin he couldnt understand how i drove the the s14 the way it was set up and would like to see me in a car with a great set up.. as too did WEZ at WKD last year before the last round of PD in Cork, so i took this advice onboard and went to Darren @ MCN Sport, who knows exactly how a twincam should be set up and supplying the best bits for it,... Damien Mulvey who just seems to be the man at building a reliable good going drift car so all the running gear and wiring is in his hands this next few weeks, he's tasty at his work also and a decent mad to talk too about the best way to do things etc.. so it should be fun when i get the hang of it :D
I know dates are not out yet but based on first event date of last year.do you think it will be out for first round
chrisbrady325
09-02-11, 10:40
it will be out for paddys day at the latest, the aim is for the first weekend of march and all seems to be coming to plan so far, UDC round 1 is on the 7th of march i'd like to have that as a day for setting the car up
May get the boxes of red bull ready :-) it will be hard going to get it out for march.that's only like four weeks away

Ok After a Trip to Damien Mulveys yesterday in Cork, i was happy with the progress so far, just over a week left till i get her back rolling and running, heres a few pics i took while down there, the lads are gonna be busy getting all the work done before next weekend but it's in good hands :)
The Car as it Sat on Damiens Lift, Engine, Mounted, Gearbox Mounted,
http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/6302/caronmulveyslift.jpg (http://img30.imageshack.us/i/caronmulveyslift.jpg/)
Engine Brackets, a nice tidy job Damien has done with them, really happy with the position of the engine
http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/8374/enginebracket.jpg (http://img222.imageshack.us/i/enginebracket.jpg/)
Heres a pic of where the gear stick will be if you look closey you will see, now the original hole will be plated dont worry :)
http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/8538/gearstickpositon.jpg (http://img51.imageshack.us/i/gearstickpositon.jpg/)
A Pic of the Intercooler, Piping ( which is wrong but Damien is going to make up a full new Stainless steel Piping Kit) And The Middle Section of the exhaust system which joins at the downpipe and only goes as far as the front of the rear subframe and then is tilted towards the ground
http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/7407/intercoolerandcenterpie.jpg (http://img140.imageshack.us/i/intercoolerandcenterpie.jpg/)
The New Fuel Cell, its only sitting there in the pic, it will be mounted where the spare wheel well usually is underneath the car and then sheeted over with only the filling cap showing
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/65/newfuelcell.jpg (http://img201.imageshack.us/i/newfuelcell.jpg/)
Thats all Ive got for now, car will be back next week and by then, coilovers will be completed and fitted, all adjustable arms, New Dash, Gauges, Seats, Fuel, Cell, Exhaust System, FMIC, All Wiring done,

Update Time: Thanks to Mike Fitz for the pics, fair play bbbbaaaaaiiiiiiii!!!!
Ok so the plan was to lift the car today, but its now goin to be a few days late, due to delivery problems with parts and Mulvey Motors being very very particular at their job! which im glad to hear :D no point rushing it either, i'll just have to make a burst next week when i get it home, The Lads are very very tasty at their job down there and are treating this project as if it were their own, i gotta say goin by the pics and chats over the phone im over the moon with the quality of work these lads are doing to this car for me, Great to have yous backing me!! Big Thanks to all involved!
Anyways I'll let the pics do the talking :p

http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/2473/fmicmounted.jpg (http://img121.imageshack.us/i/fmicmounted.jpg/)
My Fav Piece of work from Damien to date, is this the fuel cell which he has made a bracket to mount the cell to, its dropped down where the spare wheel well used to be, i think its a savage job! the new fuel pump also mounted there,
http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/3339/fuelcellmounted.jpg (http://img687.imageshack.us/i/fuelcellmounted.jpg/)
Seat is now mounted in place to where i want it, big seats in such a small car, im sure its a tight squeeze and took alot of patience to do them, Great job lads!!

Here is the vid of Chris vs. McKeever. I dont know how much horespower is in the RB26 S13 but you can see how much grip is in the relativly stock sr20 86
A shameless plug here for MCNSPORT but its amazing what properly developed suspension can do. Our MCN/AVO ae86 suspension is being run all round on Bradys car and you can see how amazingly well its working on its first day out with brakes not quiet working
We will be helping both Chris and Mike Fitz develop their cars throughout 2011, Mike will also be running MCN/AVO suspension on his FC.
With the new Prodrift tyre rule suspension will become the most important factor in drifting and we aim to prove that properly developed suspension with on track support and expert knowledge will out perform the made in china brands
We will also be able to supply different spring rates and shock valving and even 2-way (bump and rebound) or 3-way (high speed bump, low speed bump and rebound) adjustable dampers

ok no further updates on this for awhile now, was at mondello drift practice on saturday and the car got a poor doing!, a lad pulled across the track infront of me while drifting towards honda corner at i'd easily say 75+ mph, nothing i could do but hold tight, front of it is bravely twisted, needs to be benched and jig'd, along with intercooler piping replaced, few hoses, adjustable wishbone arm straightend, new rose joint, the bulk head is pushed towards the right and twisted back, needs welding again after benching, and then painted, (Only for the cage coming out to the strut and the seam welding already done she would be a total mess) the front wheel took a good bang also so gota get it straightened,
A Major set back that i didnt need!! hopes of competing at PD round 1 are out the window, too much money to be spent in this short space of time, Round 2 i'll hopefully be out for!, Pretty damn pissed to say the least!

Holy shit balls  I took a quick look in the pits before you went home didnt think it was dat bad.I thought at most the support along the inside of the wing from shock tower to front panel was the worst bit!! sickened for ya lad!

Thats a shit one just after getting it finished, The adjustable arms for S-bodys are cheap, you know just as much as I do, you pay for the likes of the SP-Tec stuff, no hachi stuff is cheap FACT.
Christ that is some sickener lad... what was yer man at like??
got a blow out afaik and was movin from left of the track to the right to pull off... thats wat i was told anyways

TRUE, instead of checking his mirror or driving down to honda corner and around into the pits, he decided to just cut straight across the track onto the gravel at the overhead crossover, silly silly move obviously wasnt thinking, he got off lightly, glad no1 was hurt especially passangers, but im gutted after all the hard work spent on the car,
as Robbie said chin up, and thats what im doing :( but times being how they are and me tryin my outmost best to have the car out for round 1 and then this happens, i'm very F**KED off!
Fuck, thats not good.............sorry to hear lad, surely if some ppl pull some favours ul get out for round one. Anything you need down this end let me know.

22-03-11, 20:50
To be fair he was nt trying to cut off the track he was still trying to get it under control. he had no intention of pulling off into pits at the crossover was going to head around honda.

sickened for ya lad, head up tho :)
To be honest i dont know why im getting the blame. i had a blow out as i was drifting the straight, the car took off and i had to correct it twice to get it under control, at this stage i was in the middle of the track, so its up to me to pull over, its racing rules and mondello rules to pass on the left only, so i pulled to the right, i did check my mirrors, but there are blind spots, especially when half sideways and then bang, you hit me from behind trying to pass on the right at full tilt. i asked if you saw me and why didnt you brake, and you just said you were full on the pipe. now im not blaming you, but i dont see how im to blame either. its an accident, thats how motor-sports go.

Living as close to Mondello as I do and having done 3zillion track days etc the above is correct with regard to the rules!
Wasnt there on the day but what Ronan mentions about passing on the left if true!
In all honesty lads theres no blame game here if you take your car onto a track be prepared to loose it no matter who or what you are and im sure chris will agree!!..Obviously angerd and gutted about his pride and joy also..

yes very true and i can only imagine how hard it could have been to see him he was carrying huge speed i think its just one of those things we all take these risks everytime we take the cars out its a shame it happened to such an expensive car but honestly i think this could have happened to any two drivers
terrible shame to see this happen but highlight the need for different groups i think like beginner, novice, pro etc
And to be fair Chris's car is on a serious diet so Im sure alot of strenght is gone out of the front too!
Just wicked unlucky!
Shit happens as the fella says!
Im sure with his determination he wont be long before hes back doing the manji

hold on here a wee minute boi! dont ye go gettin cocky about it, you were in the wrong,! i didnt ask you for a penny, i let it slide, i could have been a cunt about this and i wasnt i walked away angry and dissapointed and not with sore hands just remember that, what are you at anyway driving the car till the tyre blows out?? surely you would have had the cop on that you were a danger to anyone following, you would have heard your tire flapping, and instead of stopping you drove on like a dickhead and " lost control" you say, but you really had just got the car back straightend and decided to take a sharp exit off the track where you are not supposed to exit anyway!! so yes you were in the wrong, as i know myself and had been told by many people afterwards including the safety lads on track, yes i was full of the pipe and i was all morning down that straight, i was in the middle of drifting past you and i was fully in control, you made a mistake ok, im not sayin u did it on purpose, im simplying sayin pay more attention on track because you dont want the same thing to happen again only next time you may run into someone who hasn't the same attitude as me.. I'd love to see the face on you if the shoes were on the other feet or hear what you'd have to say... to cut it short, i dont want anything from you, i dont want your help, just be a bit more careful in future, it is Motorsport at the end of the day and this is how it goes, shit happens, you were to blame now take it like a man, build a bridge and good luck

yes, but when he was slowed on the left what are you to do?? i cant go on the grass.. and what was with exiting the track instead of driving around, he completely crossed the track without considering anyone behind, a mistake thats all im sayin
terrible shame to see this happen but highlight the need for different groups i think like beginner, novice, pro etc
i agree with joey, this could have happened to anyone. ive been in motorsport a long time and have raced a variety of disciplines, im no (Pro) but im definitely not a novice, i dont see how group's would change this.
in respect to car's, my yolk didnt exactly get off lightly as im looking for a new shell now. dont get me wrong i feel bad for chris, i of all people know the work that goes into these cars, its unfortunate to have crashed so soon after building it and before the first round too. i hope it comes together for him, and look forward to seeing him hopefully at the first round.
chris, i dont see any cause for abuse here. i was not in the wrong in any given way, i have been racing long enough to know the rules of the track, you passed a lame car, on the right at full tilt, and hit me frrm the back,. you could have braked and avoided the whole thing, you decided to accelerate and try push through. i was pulling over to the right, which i was completely in the right to do. you hit me on the wrong side, and from the back, you cant justify that in any way.
hold on here a wee minute boi! dont ye go gettin cocky about it, you were in the wrong,! i didnt ask you for a penny, i let it slide, i could have been a cunt about this and i wasnt i walked away angry and dissapointed and not with sore hands just remember that, what are you at anyway driving the car till the tyre blows out?? surely you would have had the cop on that you were a danger to anyone following, you would have heard your tire flapping, and instead of stopping you drove on like a dickhead and " lost control" you say, but you really had just got the car back straightend and decided to take a sharp exit off the track where you are not supposed to exit anyway!! so yes you were in the wrong, as i know myself and had been told by many people afterwards including the safety lads on track, yes i was full of the pipe and i was all morning down that straight, i was in the middle of drifting past you and i was fully in control, you made a mistake ok, im not sayin u did it on purpose, im simplying sayin pay more attention on track because you dont want the same thing to happen again only next time you may run into someone who hasn't the same attitude as me.. why would i accelerate on? and risk hurting a passanger, myself, yourself and your passanger? now your just turning this all around... you turned at the last min.. no car could stop with no notice..simple.. its not abuse lmao! as i said get over it, i never even mentioned your name on here so you should have kept quiet and just let me update my project thread... enough s**te talk just let it be!

edit......
it is abuse, as you called me a dickhead, and blamed me. i came on here, as everyone know's it was me you, hit, and i wanted to make it clear it wasnt my fault. in no way would i benifit from totaling my car and yours. you have admitted to seeing me all over the track, and you could have braked like anybody else would have,. i stand by my first post, i did everything i was supposed to do, you passed on the right and hit a slower car at speed from the rear. theres a massive sign on pit wall saying no overtaking on the right. now im done with this childishness, i hope you get your car sorted, and back up 100%. and best of luck in PD.
