View Full Version : Is it nessesary to have a coolant overflow bottle
This could be a stupid question, I don't really want to put a coolant overflow bottle in the car, I've done a wire tuck and have it nice and neat looking if I have to I'll put an alloy one. But trying to keep it tidy looking as possible
Is it ok to run witout one ?
Or does anyone no of any small alloy one s around dat will do the job don't really want a big one like the circuit sports one
get 1 made dat u can tuck away doesnt havto be anythin special

was only thinking this very same question lad
i think you could run without it without too much trouble
dont most aftermarked rad caps let off pressure if it gets too high anyway???

yes they let off the pressure bt wen pressure drops they suck bk in the coolant again

ya i know that alright but could you not just fill it back up yourself again?
it might be different for a road car but with my drift car i check the water level every few runs...so wouldnt that be ok??:)

no wen pressure drops creates a vacum and draws the coolant bk in..

basically its their if u get a slight leak on the high pressure side this allows for extra coolant to go into rad/engine and not to over heat so quickley
I learned the hard way Keith dont do it..
Like teh lads said when it runs hot the water over flows into the bottle and sucks it back in when it cools..
If you dont have teh bottle it will over flow and cant re top itself up so basically it'll run you lower and lower in coolant, unless you constantly check it between track runs or normal driving
Ye I have a pressure realease on my rad cap alright. Ye I'd be guessing you d have to be keepin a close eye on the coolant if u were nt using an overflow I've seen a few nice little alloy ones Im guessin any overflow would do the job really considerin seen people usin old coke bottles an all ha

once the water level is above the level of the pipe it wud work perfect :D
Another thing you no the way the standard overflow botlles on 180s crack and break would that then stop it from sucking coolant back into the rad ?

so are ye saying that it would be alright to run without one on a drift car so if you were keepin an eye on the water level a lot??
Nah man as the pipe leading to the rad would always be submerged/lower than the coolant
In the same way u would suck the last bit of a drink from a glass with a straw.

no jst looks nasty nd wont hold as much water..
Alright cheers lads so basically I need it o just another quick question probably sounding like a retart here but does it need to be mounted up higher than the rad it's self just asking cause in nearly every car I see it's mounted higher than the radiator

no doesnt really matter once its not too far away.....
at scamper def needed on drift car because u will always be runnin alot hotter than normal
haha I know that man, i was actully answering the post above that one where he asked bout if the bottle was bust, would it still work.
Def keep one in a drift car tho,as you said runs hotter than normal.

sorry bud ment the other lad :D my bad
Flushing the bay of my Corrado at the moment so i'm getting rid of/relocating a lot of bits. Instead of an overflow resovoir which normally sits like a globe beside the passenger side turret i'm going to be running a BMW 525 aluminum rad, which has the overflow built into it.
