So has anyone got experience of both of these turbos?
Im undecided on which one to get.
Is the gtss worth the extra few hundred quid?
How do they compare as regards spool and top end?

ive the s15 one and its great, plenty of power for what i use the car for, very quick spool with power pretty much all the way through the rev band. max power is circa 320 bhp iirc??

If you can go the extra few quid, the gtss is a better turbo

Ya Money wouldnt be an issue Darren. Does it have a better top end than the S15?

well if money aint an issue get a gtrs and a set of 550 injectors and make some real ponies

gtss will flow to about 360hp

u will need a re-map anyway to get the most from a gtss too

do you have an aftermarket ecu?

hav had 3 gt-ss turbos on my car, great turbo. great spool. i was making 355bhp with 555cc's z32, poncams, etc.......... the last one i used was onn a gtr twin turbo setup, smaller exhaust, better spool, bit less power but had more torque

the oil restrictor in the oil feed got blocked in my last one, killed the turbo. then i ran an s15 turbo. nice little turbo. but no comparison to the gtss...

however..... they are a fragile turbo in my opinion(espically the bearings) , if i was buying again id go for the garrett equivlant. or maybe the slightly larger gt2871r. hope this helps.

I ran one for 4 years on a drift car so i dont think they are that fragile

Also they are made by garrett for HKS with a larger exhaust turbine etc compared to a normal t28

one model gt2871r is the same as gtrs. There are a good few gt2871r models with a lot of differences

pretty sure this is the one to go for http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/catelog/Turbochargers/GT28/GT2871R_472560_15.htm

i put a lot of reasearch into it when i was buying one but have kind of forgot half of it now

Rule of thumb would be smaller exhaust turbine A/R is more responsive, larger A/R more peak power at higher rpm

i know all this, but i do think the bearings are fragile, i know they are. i change garret turbos EVERY week . also oil seals dont last anywhere near as long as holset etc.

i know theres many specs of 2871r's , like most turbos.

i was just givin my opinion. i love the gt-ss, but there are much better similar turbos out there.

Ok fair enough but comparing it to a holset is like comparing petrol and diesel. Holsets are normally made to do hundreds of thousands of miles on trucks. Granted they are on some cars too but usually they are tiny

Only reason people bolt them to skylines is cos they are cheap, if they were the same price no one would bother. would you agree?

unless you use the Holset "Super" range but they are only available in Finland

yeah, i know they are totally different in terms of flow charachteristics. worlds apart. and i know the reason i would try one is just because i could get one cheap (free, lol) . and hope for the best. obviously buying a turbo designed and tested for an engine is a better option.

i suppose holsets are predominately a truck turbo. i found a nice hx27 there where i work b4 xmas, and it has a t28 flange, reliable im sure but probly not the greatest option.

anyway basically a gt-ss is well worth the extra few quid over s15 turbo. but there are other potions is wat im sayin. :)

i know its not directed at me but theres LOADS of info out there on these turbos. google is your friend

gtrs can flow a nice bit over 400hp where 350-360 is pushing a gtss to the limit.....

heres a nice link, figures mite not be 100% accurate and all power outputs are a 'safe' manafacturers limits. usually the turbos can push another 10-15% extra

http://website.lineone.net/~jon_ed/Turbo_Table.htm

them figures arent gospel now but its a handy page to have

nice link man. Is the GT25 flange different to the t25 flange? Just looking at the gt2871r turbos

:@ darren how does the gt-rs compare to the gtss, and gt2871r ?

basically gtss is for max 360hp

gtrs and 2871r are the same thing and will push 450+ depending on spec of engine

gtrs is still not considered a large turbo and is prob the best all round turbo for sr20

as its not a large turbo its not considered laggy, full boost bout 3000-3500rpm
