my 180sx is idling from 1500rpm-2000rpm and keeps doing this. Iv been told the MAF could be faulty.

Here's a video of it running to help explaining the issue, ill also point out now that the lanbda sensor isnt attached but that wouldnt affect it.

Anyone any ideas as to what could be wrong?

Did this just start randomly or after addition of mods, parts change etc? I emptied the coolant system when doing the manifold on my 180. After I filled her back up, I had the similar idling.. it started fine, then when it began to warm up after a few minutes the rough idling started.

It turned out I needed to bleed the system, air pockets in the system (ecu gets confused temp readings). Prob nothing to do with your prob thou.

I'd also double check all the vacuum piping to be sure nothing is loose or damaged.. could a number of things.. MAF could have shat itself also

PS: great idea adding video ;)

Iv still to make sure the coolant system is free from air locks

Didnt think it would have much to do with it but ill check it out none the less

I taught it would be a good addition :)

Anyone else any ideas??

Coolant and vacume leak would both cause irratic idling but dont think they would make it smokey like that. I could be wrong and stand to correction of course but its very smokey.
At a guess and I could be way off but maybe turbo trouble???

The turbo has no play in the shaft, but its a T25 off a CA18:(

I also fucked a full container of stk injector cleaner and octaine booster into the tank

Maybe the mixture of the injector cleaner and the octaine booster together might be doing it???

@ian.... Would the afm make it smokey aswell??

smokey? it doesnt look that smokey its proberly a cold shed car not stared in a whle its gona look smokey as if it has full exhaust, and the air fuel mixture will be wrong if the afm is reading wrong yes that would cause it 2 be smokey also my 1 was blowing black smoke running lean

i'd presume any inaccurate readings from the sensors being picked up by your ecu could cause it to run lean or rich causing the smoke. Put your hand over the exhaust, see is it running rich.

Maybe try get a loan of an afm first and try that. Start narrowing it down lad

could also be another thing to look at.....

my car had exacly the same symptoms, turned out my ecu was sending funny signals to my fuel pump, cutting it off for a second and not signaling it properly so the car would rev smooth,i had this problem for a while, wired the fuel pump direct and its be fine ever since...i dunno is your pump wired direct or what...

yup the pump is wired direct to the battery via switch.

Danmoorhead reckons i could have a vaccum pipe disconnected.

Another thing is that the car hasnt ran in a while, would that contribute to it??

Bleed the cooling system, its prob the handiest to do at the moment without another AFM.
Is there water running through the top right hose going from the rad to the block. Giv it a squeeze... if theres nothing running through and you have coolant u'll need to get the thermostat to open and let everything thru. Jump in the car and flick on the fans with a bit of heat, also pop off the radiator cap (careful shes not silly hot, burn urself) and have a look at the level in the rad.

Have you checked the idle control valve? I had the exact same problem on my rx idling between 1k AND 1.5k so i brought into eddie doyle and he told me to adjust the idle control valve, located on the throttle body elbow on my rx7. twist the screw in all the way and then screw out 1 & 1/2 turns and then check, if problem persists, screw out another 1/4 to a 1/2 turn....

This worked for me!!!!

This worked for me!!!!From what i can hear, the car seems lumpy through the rev's...the idles control valve will only effect ideal and shouldnt affect performance through the rev range!

Is the car not idling on its own with no throttle at all from 1.5K to 2K and back to 1.5K etc, etc...Thats what it sounds like anyway! Adjusting this idle control valve will set the idle back steady and it will stop hunting on its own, well should do anyway, correct me if im wrong but this was my experience and it worked for me. That was 2 days ago and it hasnt happened since....maybe i got lucky :D
