http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC00982.jpg?t=1303857904
well i discovered why the inside was so low i removed the roof lining to discover the sun roof which is a big massive thing that takes up the whole roof and is 2 inches thick and has 4 pipes one at each corner 2 copper pipes at the front and a nice little motor well i can safely say its coming out ha :D
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC00970.jpg?t=1303772932
and i cut me finger on the headlight glass when it broke but ah sure its all part of the job bt:)
right this is a bit of a hope for the best job the gear linkage was held together with elasticbands and it kept popping out so since i got pissed off trying to get a circlip onto the linkage i got a jubily clip and tightened the shite out of it funny enough it feels better changing gears

its the adapter for my airflow meter
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01164.jpg
so i wasted no time in whippin off the standard airbox and puttin on the adapter
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01165.jpg

update tme so when the day came to go to goldstone i was up early doing last minute bits and pieces before i went off
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01168.jpg
and we got the car loaded in the trailor after half an hour thank god we brought the longer planks ha
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01169.jpg
so as happy anything i finally got to goldstone and unloaded the car and got out and after an hour or 2 the car didnt seem right and with smoke coming up through the bonnet and a terrible smell in the car i got in after shifting down gears and realising it would go into 1st http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01171.jpg
and the i also realised my exhaust melted the bumper so thanks to brendan who helped load the car with a digger we got the car home and brought it up to my uncles garage
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01179.jpg
so we found a number of problems the drive shaft mount at the back of the gearbox was in terrible shape
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01180.jpg
and we got the gear box off and realised the ring gear came off explains how the car would'nt start
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01185.jpg
and i took the pressure plate off and the clutch fell into a million pieces on the ground funny enough lookin closer at it its actually the factory clutch
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01181.jpg
so i rang up tom in mad racing and had a clutch got in 2 days so i decided id buy the lowering springs off diesel dick aswell while i was down in waterford
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01177.jpg

Nice project :)

Just too little things though is the cone-filter will just end up you loosing power unless you at least make a heat-shield or something along with it

On dyno runs, cars have lost around 5bhp with tests with standard airboxes and aftermarket cone filters apart from the odd few such as the Dave-F kits for the 328s etc.

And the other little bit would be switching to an E30 325 lightened flywheel will be a nice upgrade the next time the clutch gives up

The iS engines can be very good little engines with abit of work!

thanks ye i was thinking about doing that and im gettin the standard flywheel lightened and ye so i heard they can be good engines

Dont bite lightening the standard flywheel. It still ends up having more inertia than a lightened M20 flywheel plus it's a smaller disc of course.

My iS engine should be over 200bhp but I'll admit I'll probably have more spent on it than my S54

i know what ya mean but it was my uncles idea sure ah be grand im tryin not too spend too much on the engine apart from servicing and stuff like that cause i hope to put a bigger engine in but if then again i might hang on to the is engine its seems to be indestructible

well sure lads and ladies id better update this so keep the fans happy but anyway im busy puttin cians springs on the car and as im in school it aint easy but after a bit of work the spring was on now the challenge was to get it back on with a dowel ya have to line up and the shock springin back and the wishbone doing the same i got sick of it so i took out the trolley jack and stuck an axle stand under it and stuck this in the top bolt hole if i thought of it earlyer would of saved me the 20 minutes
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01206.jpg

now to start on the passenger side will i make the tannery next sunday at all

DaveM-sport
12-09-11, 19:26
oh jaysus id definely say so i heard it running but when i come to put it in im gonna do things properly john paul was sayin to keep it as cool as possible so an m3 rad and a massive bonnet vent and a few other bits

I don't know about a massive bonnet vent but an alloy rad, new metal impeller waterpump and 88 degree stat and it should be fine.

Other than that, you could take the head off and change to arp head studs and nuts, mls headgasket and things so it reduces the chance of making shit of the head and block down the line if the headgasket goes but some might consider it over-kill.

Handy thing about the M52 is your 4cylinder springs will work nicely as there's more or less no difference in weight of the engines.

Coilpacks and leads ok? They often cause a mis-fire on the M42 and M44s.

The ignition drivers in the ECU get fried too though at times if the coils are getting weak.

Of course and so will a lightened 5.9kg single-mass M20 one from an E30 325i etc :)

get a nice lightweight billet one from Barrysmotorsport though, the dualmass standard M3 ones are shite.

Shur fcuk it, I've an E46 M3 clutch, flywhee and gearbox on my E30 318iS :p

if i knew id tell ya :L bought the engine off polish lads that could barly speak a word of english! all i got out of them was 3 stage clutch, flywheel light! heaviest clutch i ever felt and hard enough to set off without being up in the revs!
was using it in a road car myself and it was torture in traffic!!

it'll be fine. E36 5 speed boxes cost fookall anyway even if it does pack up over time.

All the Barrysmotorsport M3 engined cars have very strong Exedy Hyper-single flywheels and boxes are doing fine really with pretty much no more wear than if they were using standard clutch and flywheels.

Did ya get a 6 cylinder gearbox with it? You'd do the engine swap in about day or less if you had the bits all bolted together. Take the whole front end off the car and makes it simple really, four main nuts holding it on and then a few little ones holding the nosecone in place

yep, all bolts off nicely on the E36 apart from the 4 little spot welds on the nose-cone but your probably best to drill them out anyway as it'll make it easier to take it off in the future if you have to do any other work or if you damage it.

Do the 2.8 engines have oil coolers? That seemed to be a problem with my 2.5s, oil heated too much

and had my first wall tap :o
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01237.jpg
so when i got her home i checked out the damage basically everything shifted ha :o http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01243.jpg
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01239.jpg

so the plan for the next few months is
find money some where
get coilovers
more steering lock
ensure the 2.8 is gonna be as reliable as the 1.8
get an alloy rad and generally stuff to keep the engine cool
put in the 2.8 and go drifting with it
seems simple does'nt it

Paddy drifter

update: so with the tannery drift day next weekend and it being such a shite day i decided to repair my aluminium backbox last thing i want is it fly off and hit someone :o

http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01247.jpg
so i got a bit of aluminium and cut it to shape
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01252.jpg
if in doubt get the pop rivets out so i drilled a few holes and stuck in a few pop rivets
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01253.jpg
a nice strong job now :D

and as well after doing this and basically rearranging the corner of the car
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01237.jpg
so it was time to bate it out lucky enough my da is pretty handy with a sledge and a lump hammer

right lads and ladies time for an update :)
so after doing this to the car
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01239.jpg
it also done this
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01291.jpg
which ment the boot didnt shut to well at all so i decided to treat the car to a new present so i picked up the phone and i give murray motorsport a shout and purchase these
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01290.jpg
and like the way i always am when i buy something new i wasted no time in puttin them on (dont mind the pic being a bit blurry it was a camera phone at night :o  )
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01292.jpg
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01294.jpg
and as well after a day at the tannery after the exhaust falling off the car  and using one of the tyre walls as a clipping point and i mean a clipping point for the front bumper i had a lil repairing to do luckily it was easy enough
a good as new front bumper repair :D
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01286.jpg
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01287.jpg
and now the stupid exhaust since my last repair didnt work (transport box on the back of the tractor hit it) i decided to make up this bracket no pics of it all together but it gives the backbox a bit of movement so i dont break off and it works
http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Paddydrifter/DSC01288.jpg
