View Full Version : my 180sx build (this gonna take a while)
Been planning on doing this for the past few months now,hoping to have it all near enough done by xmas but prob not as there s serious amounts of work in it. i started ripping it apart there the other night was painning on painting everything all parts undereath all that, i was having a look round and the sill s are in bits from being jacked up split in some places and a good bit of suface rust etc i could fix it but i want this to be 100% might aswell do it right, so im now gonna re shell the car heres list of the stuff i have planned
re shell the car i think i have a mint shell sorted 95 one which is more or less spotless with sunroof to :)
be spraying the whole underneath of the shell and all subframe etc
just got new bumper (origin streamline of drift2motorsport)
gonna give it a serious re-spray the whole car with all wide arches all fiberglass panels blocked etc so no wavey panels plan is to have it looking perfect
remove aircon
tidey up all wiring when swapping the engine
spray the engine bay and inside the back of the car as it was origanally white
new exhaust
new rear lights
new bushings all round
if dont run outta money ill be gettin 326 power wing aswell
flock the dash and console
new gauages(maybe built into the dash)
i have the color picked for it should look really nice and be a bit different from any other 180 around

Awesome idea! I agree with Gem, the R.B. boot spoiler is sweet, really sets off the car so at least you have a choice. Fair play man cant wait to see how it turns out
your ea brave man! that was one of the nicest if not the nicest 180 in ireland!

trust me lads if ya think the car was nice before its gonna be like a brand new 180 thats plan anyway paint job alone is gonna take bout 3 weeks to not going teal green or that ive got a color picked an all its different but should look class im keeping the wheels ye, gonna re do the centre with black cap and will be painting the face of the wheel before anyone goes abusing me for painting them just wait till i get pics up first ha, have it all planned out in my head think it should look class well hopefully

getting some 50/50 lights too i was gonna go with the kouki lights but think these will suit it lot better , not so to go for the clear or smoked either would look well id say

ye im gonna go with the smoked i think cause there s gonna be a good few black parts on it and getting bmw7 series smoked indicators for it, filling the old holes and putting them under the vent on the wings

sprayed up all the suspension arms an tank on sunday there i no prob be getting abused for goin to far but i want it to be like a new car when i finish just using some left over paints i have from re-sprays for all the parts underneath have a load of micro flake in the parts can see it a bit in the 2nd pic

got my new bushing kit in today as well im gonna have to buy subframe bushings seperate just going for driftworks ones as there only poxy add in the kit for the subrame an i just burnt the old ones out:rolleyes:

and finally my new shell is here to. this car belongs to one of my mates and is proper mint its only done id say less than a 1000 miles in the last 4 years been in his shed for the rest i sprayed this car for him last year an moulded in wide arches and was only driven couple 100k since so its gonna save me alot of prep time, this car is being broke for parts now to it has fresh engine rebuild an all shame i no but he s no interest in it anymore ill have a for sale thread up in next week for parts

i have most of the new shell stripped at this stage is is a bit of an old pic all that s left now is to pull the engine out , my own engine is ready to come out to just waiting on a new engine hoist should be here tomorrow so hopefully both of them will be out this weekend

just a small update got a new engine hoist there today so hoping both engines will be out by the wk end , spend most of the day today getting the front lined up and trying to get the gaps good ended up having to cut a re fiberglass the p/s wing cause just wasnt fitting good at all everything is fitting good now so hopefully after its painted it ll go back the same but never no with poxy fiberglass

kinda had to man if i wanted it to be mint there was rust in few spots and hole under the sill so be quicker just re shelling it
well got the 2 engine out there last week end and started stripping the bay in the new shell its fairly clean, got under the arches all cleaned up think im just going to shoults them again they where only done last time the car was sprayed and has only swwn boutt 800 kms since then

i got the whole underneath of the car done to with 2 coats of sholts i then laquered( before laquer in the pic there) over it for a bit of added protection sometimes water can get under it and make it bubble up so hopefully this will stop any of that crap

came over saturday mornin and rubbed down the engine bay for paint i had wanted to paint it in the spray booth but with no subrame or wheels i decided to just paint it out in the shed cause need to get this done in 3 wks really came out nice anyway so all good, first i put down a silver base coat i really should been using gold to bring out the purple in the candy but i didnt have enough:eek:

then on with the candy real pain in the hole to paint an engine bay in it cause its so transparent and then tryin to get the gun in tight spaces but came out really nice put a blue micro flake in with it cant really see it in the pics have a heap of stickers lyin round so i just through one on when it was in base coat and then laquered over it.
the camera didnt pick up the color great its alot brighter in person

down to the wiring , f**k me wish i didn't start with the wiring i was gonna put all the fuse boxes everything inside the car under the dash but when i had a good look realised i would basically have to pull the loom to pieces and would probably take a couple of weeks to do right, so i decided to tuck the fuse boxes under the car its still allot of work but its the handiest way to tidy up the bay, here couple of pictures from Monday i should be ready to put the engine back in either tm or friday if all goes well so ill have more pictures then

the smaller fuse box mounted have all the conectors sealed with double bubble (stop water getting in and corroding them) and well insulated so should be fine here

the cars just about all wired up now looks nice and tidy compared to before ill get some proper pictures up when i get the engine back in

i no ive spent a full 2-3 day s already just wiring just hope its all done right done electrnics for a few years so hopefully it is we ll no by the end of the week anyway
[peterT] i could sort something out for you cheap if u want would be a month or 2 before i could do it dow if you were half decent at prep work it would save alot! of money that and the paint are the main big costs in re spraying a car if i got a car in the was prepped and literally just had to be painted i could do it at a reallly good price

[Bobbys14] I've sealed all the connectors with double bubble stuff it stops any moisture/water getting in and causing problems and i have them well insulated so that shouldn't be a problem at all

well bit of a big update now got all the crap wiring an shit outta the way this week
decided to clean up the engine a bit so sprayed the inlet and the block up they cleaned up well, pics of the block further down.

put the new bushings in and bought some a/m engine mounts too, there was allot of play in my old one not sure what make the new ones are anyone any ideas there 100 times better than the old ones anyway?

I've been sorting out all the wiring the past week this is the mess that was under the dash i don't no who was doing this wiring but it was brutal wires everywhere so i ripped out wat i didn't need and re-wired the gauges,turbo timer and wired my boost controller in too, also wired up my radio

next was the engine Ive spent nearly a week re wiring the loom and hiding the wire its been a pain in the hole to do i got 90% of it done, then i needed to drop the engine back in to finish off the rest,

i then started to finish off the wiring hiding as much as i could cutting and leghtning wires and soldering them back together

i eventually got everything wired up was delighted to be finished, went to start it and nothing the power fc wasnt even turing on:eek:head was rect well i spent next few hours checking all my earths etc everything seemed fine bar the engine not starting and the power fc not coming on ha,i checked to see if the ecu was getting power and it was then i got the pin out of the ecu an started going through it my head was melted at this stage i was after re wiring the whole loom so the thoughts of riping it out and starting again was depressing,then i had a little brain fart forgot i was after buying a new alarm the was already fitted in the car the sensor was on the ground so i flashed the key against it and it fired straight up :rolleyes:delighted

here it is all back in there s a few vacum lines the red ones there i wanna hide and few little wires and that, ill be taking off the rocker cover, and intercooler pipes all the purple parts there to re spray them got some paint matched up for crusie pink/yashio pink was bit dark when i took the pictures of the paint but its a really good match

No the pink was just for the engine bay rocker,pipes and that but had a change of plans this wk so the pink is not happening now.

got my last few bushings in eventually went to 2 garages an they said they couldnt get them in (useless) so i spent bout 2 hours trying to get them in i boiled them in water for 20 mins to soften them up the eventually got them in

gave my coilovers a clean up came up like new:D i got a nismo exhaust off my mates 180sx he s breaking just buffed the back box up and a bit of high temp paint for the rest cleaned up well

have the underneath of the car all finished just have to put the brake s back on an bleed them and change the gearbox oil, onto the body work now:D

You can spray a car just as good in a clean shed man the spray booth is great but you don't need it to get a nice finish once you have a decent gun, compressor an a clean place to do it you can get a lovely finish , any imperfections can usually be wet sanded out then if Yr gonna try it yourself give me a shout and I'll tell you the best way to get a nice finish

not sure yet i cant bloody make up my mind what color to do the outside yet iv a few colors in mind but cant pick i was gonna do it a color called white gold its like a light champagne gold pearl its on the new vw cc s and golf,was thinking dessert sage metallic,sparkly brown stuff like that but not mad on them colors but now I'm thinking a dark color would look better im just gonna pick a color this week and order it so i cant change my mind again ha

That's actually a fairly good idea there. Maybe if got a few people interested could organise something like that alright I'd have to charge a fee but wouldn't be much if who ever was interested was anyway half decent with working with your hands I'd say they d be able to pic up the basics in a day and then it would be just practice from there on. Could maybe show how to fix bumpers fibreglass parts all that kinda stuff that you actually use like and maybe organise where each person could do a bit of painting ?

right bout time for an update been flat out fixing other peoples cars last couple weeks the snows been good for me ha.
started smoothing out any ripples in the rear arches using dolphin glaze to get any of the worse ones out

followed by 3 coats of filler primer

then i layed down a guide coat

then i blocked the 2 back arches with 180 grit, tou can see how many low spots were in them (poxy fiberglass)

then i put down another 3 coats of filler primer and blocked them again with 600 wet followed by 800 and then 1200 came out lovely and smooth looks like a factory arch now so was worth iall the extra work in the end

oredered some blue leds from maplins for my gauges there think they look well

got a bit more done on the front arches to i reinforced the lip wit some p40 fiberglass then trimmed the lip more or less off completely so the wheel doesnt hit

also reinforces up the front of the arches were i have a bumper support strap fitted just to stop it cracking

i then fitted my brakes, hooked up the handbrake and filled the gearbox oil, so everything under the car is finished now

i dropped it back on to the wheels then to roll into the spray booth couldnt get over how small the car looked on the ground it s been on stands so long now ha. just sat the wings up to get an idea of how it will look, looks really wide with the new wings up front

rolled it into the spray booth then took the wheels off have 80% masked up now just finish it off tomorrow morning then start spraying her:D ill be spraying a white base coat first before i lay down the red

i sprayed a few of the smaller parts during the week there well happy with the color i no few people will be like uh red again, i was gonna do it an olive green or champagne gold but i think it ll look much nicer in red so i dont care:p
all the parts here have:
4 coats of white
8 coats of red
5 laquer
all the main part s and the body will have 5 coats of laquer then be wet sanded using 1200-1500 wet sandpaper the another 5 coats of laquer then wet sand with 2000,3000,and 4000 grit and polishing lotta work but hopefull y be well worth it:D

having the same problem in work having to bake cars twice before we can buff them great build by the way great to see someone who puts the proper effort in:D

Delighted your goin red too, was a shame IMO that you ever strayed from red with the original shell...
ive 4 infra red heaters there mounted on the wall s and and intake on the roof and to extraction s on the back wall cant remember any spec of fans or heaters i had it worked out when it was built but thats a few years ago now it can get to 40-45C if i remember correct, does the job perfect just wash the whole thing down everytime i spray and have constant water running along the floor to keep dust down

heres one of the centre caps i done you can see the difference here beside one thats not polished. had to start off sanding it with 180 grit to remove the laquer then went through the grade 320,600,800,1200,1500,2000 and the machine polished it.

well went over there today for few hours got one side of the car all done spent 4-5 hours at it, started off with 1500,2000,2000 on soft pad and 4000 then buffed it twice with a hard compound and twice with a finishing compound have to say been worth it cause the shine off it is unreal:D the camera doesnt do it justice

started refurbing the centres srarted with 180g on a da to get the laquer off them then worked my way through the grades to 3000 then compounded an buffed them fairly happy with how they turned ouy have the 2 rears all polished now

Might have 3 Greddy gauges 60mm Oil temp & Pressure and water temp out of teh FC for sale if your interested.. Apexi 60mm boost gauge too
start putting some parts back on the car this week the sunroof mounts where in bits load of holes in it so started grinding them out was gonna just paint them black again but decided to polish them up turned out fairly well and look good on the car

Spray in the boot and build the new dash and refurb the two front wheels. There the main bits anyway say another 3 weeks maybe she be done hopefully

well got bit done over xmas was to hungover a lot of the days too work,
body is nearly there now the wings where taking so long to fit right and the front bumper.
with the wings i had to;
cut one basically in half and rebuild it
added 5-6mm onto the nose to get it to fit flush with the bumper
i ended up making my own metal brackets for holding the wings as the fiberglass ones weren t lineing up at all
i then re-enforced the two wings with fiberglass and trimmed the lips off the wheel arch

im not happy with how the exhaust is sitting at all its to far in and rubbing the bumper you can see it in the pics above there. so i got a 50mm spacer here and some long exhaust rubbers so hopefully this should get it right

Keys wheel dish is 90mm. I actually thought it was less. When you add the works bell kit PLUS it also has a boss kit which is fairly long means my driving position is Nascar style. Legs straight but I can touch the steering wheel with my elbows while sitting back in the seat. But I love it like that, as I feel I have more control of the wheel. Each to their own though...

I have to say when I saw the red first I thought it wouldnt be as nice as the purple but seeing the car with bits on, it will look fooking animal!

"genuine origin" drivers side was okay but p/s was warped by the looks of it thats why took so much work cant blame the person i got them off dow cause fiberglass is just brutal for warping outta shape

Ya it lined up grand in the end just really akward to line up the fecked one because the wings are also attached to the headlights(ps13).took me a long time to get the passenger one right

Update time!!
cars bout 85-90% done now
finally got the wings fitting good happy with them now after alot!!! of work, i dolphin glazed the wings for a second time , side skirt s and bumper too then i filler primered them 3 tick coats layed down a black dust coat and blocked them again just to make sure there s no ripples or low spots. another 3 coats of thinned down primer for a smooth finish then i wet sanded them with 1000 grit and ready for paint

my headlights were manky dirty inside so brought them home an threw them in the dish washer done the job ha

got a 3 layer rad and twin calsonic fans wanted to get rid of the standard fan for ages think my old rad might have been leaking too

fitted my hid s too ive got a short somewhere on the d/s headlight keeps blowing fuses think it could be something to do with my temp gauge to which i think is wired in somwhere there ill have to check it out later

gave my front mount and pipes a polish came up like new and painted the plastic light covers with plastic effect paint

fitted my 50mm exhaust spacer and longer hanger s cause the exhaust was sitting way in and looked shit i had to trim bout 20mm outta the back bumper bit dodgy on fresh paint but it came out perfect

well long overdue an update ive tried 3 times over the past few weeks to update this but my poxy pc keeps ceashing doing my head in anyway the cars basically finished im just waiting on my spoiler to come to finish it off so hopefully next week , i got the engine bay finished here s some pics of what i done i no pink doesnt go great with red but i had it there and was dyin to spray it on something:D

got another skid plate made up this ones to protect the bumper and will be bolted to the chasis of the car so if it work the way i hope when i hit a speed bump the whole car will slide onto it without damaging the bumper, well thats the idea anyway:rolleyes:

my hid s were giving me trouble somtimes only one would come on an all that crap the connector are usually the problem so i cut them out of it and soldered the conects and now they work perfect so all good
